Traditionally the bang-bang men of Chongqing live and work in the poorer district of Qiansimen, nestling between the port and the new shopping area, with its the dark, narrow alleys, flanked on either side by tall, ramshackle tenements.
The porters with their tools of the trade - a bamboo pole (or bang bang) and some rope - hang around the docks, the markets waiting for goods to carry up the steep slopes of this mountain port. A long day will earn them just a few Yuan.
Nowadays you can find many bang-bang men in the newly developed commercial area and outside designer shops and western style shopping malls hoping to carry home or to their cars the middle-class shoppers wares. Not so heavy and with better pay.

Hello neigbour! Nice dosumentary shot with a good story to tell - the juxtaposition works very well here and it's meaningful to boot...
Best wishes,
Francis

Hi Elaine,
The story behind this photo is really interesting, especially for such a strong contrast between the big billboard and men in the front of it.
It is obviously not easy for them to find a job, but they don't look disappointed. A well captured daily shot.

Hi Elaine, welcome back (or are you still there, all kitted up). A holiday this time I believe, novel idea for travel, must try it sometime :-)

Very amusing shot, and a well foudn illustrative backdrop.

Hello Elaine. A photo worth seeing. It is outstanding composed. The color red dominates, - typically for China. But only the informative text gives its value to the photo. Very beautifully. Best regards, Wolfgang.

Hey Elaine, good to see you back! Hope, the trip was wonderful.
This is a nice, funny, masculine photo. I like the layers, it's nice to scroll from down to up, seeing the colors change and the men undress ;-)

Hard to connect the backgrournd and the foreground, but the story is great, just ofr it, I'd give you the full points. One of China big asset is their way to recycle their traditions.

Perhaps it would have been worth waiting to see one of these guys at work and shoot him in full action.

Really impressive photo. I like this motive - poster + real prersons. It works here very well.
Regards.

Great composition (you could not find a better setting for thise men I think!). Great informative note. very well seen.

Hi Elaine
Nice title for this picture; well seen and captured moment in front of the advertisement.Interesting note too.
greetings Albrecht

What a fantaastic juxtaposition Elaine - couldn't be better - I had some interesting talks about Bang Bang men and social mobility trying to get my head around some of the contradictions of Chinese life - and also met a sociologist who has been trying to get finance to work with them and their families but she seems to hit brick walls everywhere - partly because of the centralised planning/commissioning of research....although I think I read recently there is now some government concern about them.

What's interesting is how they have dressed up for the part -say compared to the guys around the wholesale market. Their marketing skills are just great - muscle power promoted and they didn't even pay for it!

best wishes Kev

there is such a strong contrast between these men and the two posters above them...and once again the mannequins are westerners, not local people...! quite convenient to carry the shopping bags maybe?

Eric

A great social document,Elaine, and an interesting note. The lives of the real men seemed to be mocked by the lives of the fantasy men in their designer undies on the signboards behind. It's an engaging juxtaposition. Regards kevin

Hi Elaine
Impressive comparaison between the geant picture and the small real men. Nice colors.
Well done
Bertrand
