this is a girl who comes every evening to angkor wat, with a pup asking for money. it seems like she's trained to keep ranting "1 dollar, 1 dollar" and her voice is so sweet that it feels as if it can melt a rock. this photograph was taken late in the evening when there was not much light. also i used a very saturated film ( kodak vs) in order to give it the look of a painting. i dont know if people here will appreciate it, but i know that the photographs in the national geographic editions in the 70s and the 80s had that look and i love it. maciej has also photographed this girl and she had a pup then too. it seems that the pup never grows up. maybe the pup keeps getting replaced. maybe the parents know what effect the pair of these innocent eyes can have on people.
please note that ive used a 17 mm lens here.so although it may seem that i was standing far away somewhere at a great height, i was standing right next to her. also ive let the original composition be in order to create the effect of space and in order to show how tiny she and the pup were.

Gee! almost like a shot of the earth taken from the sky, and given how tiny she is, it is!
Aren't you happy she wore that screaming violet dress/sarong? It offsets perfectly the tones of the "earth" and punctuate her own moody stare.
the puppy looks like a bat

Great POV for this photograph. YOu manage to have a rich combination of colours. This is very well done.
Rhiannon (1728) 2004-09-15 4:16
They do look irresistable together.
I like you angle and composition.
Nice colours, maybe a little too dark.
You have an excellent capture here!
eleparc (24063) 2004-09-15 6:21
excellent sohrab! you were talking about experiencing another POV! this one is definitely different! lol i quite like it. However, the girl now stands right in the middle of the photo, and it lessens the overall impact for me. i'd rather not have so much above her head or another framing...
anyway, a good shot!
ale (1819) 2004-09-15 7:23
they are lovely, and you captured them with a perfect pov to emphasize their "size".
Beautiful colorful shot!
kikvel (4784) 2004-09-15 9:24
very nice...and your notes are excellent
the dark tint and the saturation chosen are perfect
I like the POV from above...intensifies her message

An amazing picture, and amazingly moving. Great use of wide angle to emphasize her loneliness and tiny size. She looks so lost and so does the pup. Really wonderful shot and the colors and light are perfect.
I was a bit disturbed by the fact that you chose to put her in the middle of the picture, and tried to crop a bit of the ground in the bottom. It doesn't work, actually, it's less striking. The centered composition gives the impression that she is trapped, with nowhere to turn.

Honestly, this is your best in my oppinion, and one of the best here on TE, due to the emotional charge that you have gifted it with. I am really gealous of you having taken this(and you lens too).
Gealously, yet respectfully,
RGatward (20052) 2004-09-16 9:18
Very striking and original PoV. Yes, the 'i dollar' mantra is something I think of when I remember Siem Reap, I wonder if you get it in the rest of the country.
Proxilva (2157) 2004-09-18 8:44
I have a very unpleasant feeling with this photograph... It's because the point of view and the composition it really gives me the creeps...it's kinda denigrading to me, I'm sorry :)... the colors are outstanding btw... but i can't help trying to erase this image out of my mind...
but i saw you have been busy, so your other photograph will help me i guess ;D

I am back, I had seen your superb photograph a few days ago and had put it in my favorite. I had not had time to say how much I liked it. The pov is vertiginous. And I love this blue glance of the small girl like two small planets earth. It is an at the same time tender and serious photograph. The small nice girl and her adorable puppy which looks at us too, are very attaching.
I felt the same emotion as in your first photographs of children in b&w. It is very E X C E L L E N T.

stereopirate (231) 2004-10-23 14:43
this really is the most beautyful image i have ever seen .. the green grass line in the right is great and the three colored hair-bands.. and those eyes .. wow..
will-b (236) 2004-11-03 9:07
Photography at its very, very best. I agree with stereopirate - this is one of the best photos I've ever seen, and certainly the best use of a 17mm lens!
NorthAngel (270) 2004-11-08 17:47
What a beautiful photo here again! I love the contrast of the colours, and most of all the expression of the eyes of the lovely little girl! You know how to transmit your emotions in your shots, congratulation! You are a very good photographer and I'm sure you will succeed in your studies! Good luck! Take care, Murielle.

Images are timeless for they freeze time and space.
I saw this image and and I kept comming back to it ( a qaulity most of your images seem to have)
It took me few revists to read the photographers note.
to quote your words
"it seems like she's trained to keep ranting "1 dollar, 1 dollar" and her voice is so sweet that it feels as if it can melt a rock.
it is no different from the street children you encounter in most parts of the world..
be it bombay , barcelona , krakow or angkor wat. It is Terrible that children have to earn a living selling that innocence.
schekerli (234) 2007-01-17 14:35
This is also a masterpiece! Hats off!
nisakyd (115) 2012-02-22 12:40
