Saloth Ngiep, younger brother of Pol Pot.
I was traveling upcouuntry with a journalist buddy and we found out that he lived nearby. We went by and spent some time with him. Of course he didn't have anything to do with the KR. He told me he still prayed for his brother on P'chum Ben, the Day of the Dead. Nice old guy, highly respected in his village.

Yes, that's incredible, that almost all of Khmer Rouge are living amongs Cambodians without any trouble. I've seen very touching exhibition in Tuol Sleng, depicting former Khmer Rouge then and now, this picture would suit this.
How did you get to him? It would be useful if you wrote some more informative note here, as it's not very common to see pictures of Pol Pot's relatives.

Really interesting shot Ian. I like how you have surrounded him with kids here. Maybe it is symbolic of a brighter future? your flash seems to be a little strong here, at lesat to my eyes, but I do like how it is not very diffuse, it really lights only the old man, and adds just a bit to the kids. With a diffuser/spreader, I would guess the kids would be more evenly lit, but the highlighting of your main subject wouldn't be as pronounced (can you tell I know almost nothing about flash photography?). Hope you can make some sense of my ramblings.

ian this is a worhtwhile photo not only because of its content, but also because of the composition; as Darren mentionned, getting him surrounded by kids certainly adds to the overall impact and the difused light too;-) glad to see that violence and madness has nothing to do with genes in this case;-) did he tell you how he lived through the KR era? was he abroad or also under arrest? nice shot ian!

This is a great photo to hang a story on. I believe that another of Pol Pot's brothers was actually killed by the KR. All that generation will soon be dead, and still no sign of any trials...

I read Pol Pot's bio, knew he had kins but his life was one that ran estranged from all marks of affection.
His brother looks so much like him. In the west, it would be a curse, and i wonder what is really in the depth of his mind to be related to a genocidal murderer. We can imagine that this torment is projected thru the very serious, worried stares of the children! So much pain and suffering is evoked in this pix as you took it. Masterful!

I tend to think this is a very rare shot, any site, any news room!

When I saw portraits of Pol Pot, I was often amazed that he really looks like an harmless man. Thanks to your informative note, the physical resemblance is his only bond with his brother who is a nice old guy.
A great shot

this is an interesting photo, not only for its contents, but how the expressions of all of their faces are the same. no difference even though the age difference is quite high. so +2 from me.
