Tonle Sap is lake and river system in Cambodia and designated as a UNESCO biosphere in 1997. This incredible ecosystem is the largest freshwater lake in South-East Asia which, in the dry season, drains into the Mekong river at Phnom Penh and shrinks dramatically. The area is characterised by the houses raised on stilts to cope with the dramatic changes in water levels. Tonle Sap is an essential source of fish for Cambodia and supports over 3 million people.
This picture was taken about 45 minutes drive south-east of Siem Reap. We were in a very rickety and small tour boat and were the only passengers.

hi ann. looks like quite fun this boat trip. looking at your low POV, i guess you took this from your boat at the front, with a distance of 200 mm.s focal length. beautiful natural colors too. the timing is splendid, as you captured all the three faces without any disruptions.

This is a delightful photograph because it has people in their own environment, it has splendid colour and it has action too. And, above all, it has a wonderful interaction between yourself, the photographer (and we the viewers), and the "three men in a boat".
The light and colours are amazing and you have portrayed this little scene perfectly against a nicely out of focus background which is also a good bit darker than the foreground features, so making your main subject stand out very nicely. Your exposure is spot-on and the details and sharpness are exquisite, particularly when viewed at full size of 1300 pixels wide.
P.S. If I have any criticism at all it would just be that, because this was taken to some degree contre jour, the faces of the main subjects are just a little too shaded. So I've done a quick workshop using the techniques I described in my email to you to try to lighten those parts as well as (though to a lesser extent) the front of the boat itself. I'll upload it reduced to 800 pixels wide so that you can see the whole picture, otherwise (if I remember correctly) the right side will get chopped off in the "new" version of TE. See what you think!
P.P.S. I've decided to upload two workshop pictures - both the same, actually, but one full-size and the other cut down to 800 pixels wide! So you'll be able to compare equally sized images if you want.

I am impressed that you were able to get such a fine, sharp shot whilst ensconced in a rickety boat!
Your dof gives the focal figures excellent clarity whilst the oof b/g helps give an understanding of the context.
I get the feeling that the occupants were as interested in you as you were in them!
Have a lovely w/e,
How's your little grand child progressing?

Hello Ann. Cambodia is really worth a visit. Photographers can shoot so many interesting things in this exotic country. Your photo is a good example. The picture reminds me of my stay in this country many years ago.
Best rgds, Wolfgang.

sei sempre brava in ogni genere di ripresa.
In questa alla particolare eccellenza del soggetto si unisce una notevole cura alla tecnica di ripresa con una nitidezza eccezionale.
Molto belli anche i colori.
Perfetta la composizione.
Ciao e buon fine settimana

Interesting Cambodian scene with the young monks in classical orange robes, and the adult with the required cell phone attached to ear.
My Father taught me to fish in 'rickety' small wood boats like this one, but not with colorful paint jobs.

looks like John is enjoying working on his new layering
:) Works well actually, because we can see the difference in the lighting on their faces.
For me, I like the boat! Good luck finding that boat here in Canada somewhere haha
very cool mode of transportation, and i like how you zoomed in to get this upclose and personal look.
excellent subject matter.
see you around

I´m not an expert in processing pictures, but this one looks really good to me.The light is well mastered and strong, vivid colors animate the whole scene so lovely. For me also the blurry background is a feature, which helps you to achieve so excellent end result and strong visual effect.
Interesting and perfectly captured image!
Have a nice sunday

What a super colourful and fun capture of the two Monks being ferried across the lake. They look like they are enjoying themselves with a hint of a smile. Great looking boat.
Love it, well done.

Very good daily life shot. I love it to see the man also has a cell phone with him. Reminded me of a man on a donkey in Morroco talking on the cell phone. I couldn't get a shot of him at the time, but I always remember it.
Good quality photo with natural color and light and good composition.

The world is changing fast, there's a modern guy with a mobile between the monks:)! That's the only detail that takes this shot to nowadays. It's a very good portrait of the three on the old boat. I like the focus, the colours and textures of the boat and even the water around it. A very good capture!
