Tonle Sap is lake and river system in Cambodia and designated as a UNESCO biospehre in 1997. It is the largest freshwater lake in South-East Asia. In the dry season it drains into the Mekong river at Phnom Penh and shrinks dramatically. The houses that line the waterways are raised on stilts to cope with the dramatic changes in water levels.
Tonle Sap is an essential source of fish for Cambodia and said to support over 3 million people.
The people who live in the villages have adapted to their watery environment. Even young children clamber over boats and rickety buildings overhanging the water. This picture was taken about 45 minutes drive south-east of Siem Reap. A grab shot.

Belles couleurs chaudes.
Félicitations!... et bonne journée,

A fascinating and informative note and a brilliant photogarph with which to illustrate it!
And, clever ol' you, managing this "grab" shot which has worked out absolutely perfectly! I seem to remember your telling me some time ago that you usually have your camera on a couple of different settings - one on aperure priority for lanscapes an suchlike and another on shutter priority so that you can quickly jump to that and take a shot of anything which might suddenly appear. Is that (or something like it) what you did here?
You have certainly caught a "decisive moment" with this one - the water dripping from the tip of the staff (or punting pole, oar, or whatever) that the lady is holding aloft is absolutely stunning and really held my attention until I then looked down at the boat and its interesting, colourful and happy occupants who seem to have taken a shine to the photographer!
A wonderful happy and colourful shot with incredible details and sharpness in the main subject, the distant view nicely knocked out of focus by your (relatively, considering the focal length) large aperture. Spot-on exposure too considering the not ideal lighting conditions and the fact that you took this one on the "spur of the moment".

I like grab shots, where spontaneity is more important than careful compositions. As long as the sharpness is okay - which is certainly is here - this kind of street shots (or lake shots) are often more interesting to watch IMHO. I like these faces ranging from smiles to shyness and I just love the drops falling from the woman's staff/pole/oar (to quote John).

Hi Ann, I am very curious about your photos from Vietnam and Cambodia .This view of smiling children in the boat remind me the similar views from Myanmar's Inle. Lovely shot.

what a delightful shot this is. A real sense of family here and character. The water droplets add to the magic as they give the impression of movement and your execution is just magnificent. Like this wonderful shot a lot.
Regards - Brian.

Hello dear Ann
A delightful family scene. Those little ones with their grandma in the boat, what an adventure for them. I love the look on their faces, each one is different and you have captured them exquisitely. Beautiful colours and excellent light management in circumstances where the light was not helping at all. Great shot.

A happy and informal grab shot. I want to call this an example of street photography, as that's the feel of it; come to think of it, I suspect this river is a street for the local inhabitants. The variety of expressions is what makes it work for me: the boy in blue isn't quite so sure about your interest in them as the rest it seems!

Hi Ann. A spontaneous photo in passing. These photos I like best. But you have to react quickly, otherwise the subject disappeared. Your lovely photo is a good example.
