I’m being a little sarcastic on the title. It derived from the boy’s t-shirt on the left.
Not your typical happy children picture, the situation is rather sad. We were hiking through some small villages in Northern Cambodia on route to Laos. We came upon a small house, our local village guide took us in to visit. The parents were not home, out in the farm or forest hunting or working. The boys were by themselves. Sad and dirty all they had to eat was some rice and banana. We didn’t bring much with us, I search through my bags looking for some snack food that I can give them and some spare change…
PP note: I desaturated the colors here a little to give it that muted tone.
Ratanakiri has a population of about 60,000 'Khmer Loeu' people. ('Khmer Loeu' refers to all of various minority peoples of the different tribes and is a controversial term.) The Khmer Loeu are actually 12 different groups of tribal peoples (including the Tampuan, Krueng, Kavet, Kachok, Charay, Prouv, Phnoung and Lan), living in the jungle and mountains, still practicing many of their traditional ways including slash and burn agriculture, animism, traditional clothing and housing, etc.

This is fantastic portrait of three boys,
good composition with lightening center,
delicate, subdued colors.
williewhistler (16412) 2012-08-24 11:37
Hello Way , the tone you have chosen by de-saturating the image works very well for this most poignant shot, your fine portrait conveys their situation perfectly.
A fine photograph.
Jeppo (17645) 2012-08-24 11:56
your return to innocence days is always full of touch and feelings.
the desaturated tones adds some sadness to the compo

Hello Way - Those innocent, trusting eyes make me want to pick up these little boys and hug them. A beautiful if heart-wrenching shot. Warm regards Rosemary
zanzi (13690) 2012-08-24 13:15
Those is kids are so cute with their eyes looking at your lens.
I like how you have played with the colors. It particularly suits the picture.
The light is also spot on.
marabu61 (11277) 2012-08-24 14:52
Beautiful and moody portrait of these three boys. The desaturation worked very well here.
Great work, love it.
emka (105488) 2012-08-24 23:43
Sarcastic title but I like it very much. Wonderful photo of the little boys, left alone at home. They look sad but interested what are you doing. Excellent triple portrait. I imagine you could like like the one in the middle (in your childhood days). Moody shot
Have a beautiful weekend
JFS (32459) 2012-08-25 0:43

CLODO (35614) 2012-08-25 1:17
they do noy seem happy, they don't smile as children do, and are surprised to be taken in picture. Wide open eyes reward you. Good idea to desaturate and get this kind of sepia tone.
Spend a nice WE

A picture that grabs the viewer and
it tells also more than a thousand
words. Light management, composition
the color-tone are great.
timecapturer (49288) 2012-08-25 3:12
this is stunning. The light and your execution here are just superb. Immaculate detail, full of character and the sense of innocence here is just wonderful. Exceptional work and a powerfully compelling presentation. Love it!
Enjoy your weekend - kind regards Brian.

We almost on the same track incidentally! The treatment in almost sepia makes this shot so special and influential which enhances the reportage quality to convey the emotive sadness behind those innocent faces amid the brilliant eyes. This shot in their natural setting depicts a segment of the world’s poor women, children, men and the indigenous peoples who live in rural environments who cannot fulfill their most very basic needs whose daily struggles also seldom capture world attention. What meets the eyes! In these glooming eyes I read a cry of desperation but there is always hope for better life someday perhps if they are lucky. This is really sad episode indeed and thanks for sharing the soul of these kids! A very fine effort, Congrats, TFS

Une image touchante, triste réalité, mais trois beaux enfants avec le regard grand, mais sans sourire, j'aime l'idée de diminuée le rendu des couleurs, comme un effet sépia,
everlasting (15358) 2012-08-26 1:11
Nice to see you posting here also Way. The muted tones work so well here exaggerating those six trusting eyes.
danos (102490) 2012-08-26 4:05
a really sarcastic title for the image as the three boys were looking so charmy to your lens.
I like the kind Sepia colour tints as the excellent pose taken from the boys to captured them succesfully.
ktanska (28995) 2012-08-26 7:00
These colours fit perfectly with the feeling. The looks say that you are a stranger, better be alert. Stare at the eyes, better not to turn back to you. Makes me think, that I've never been so far away myself, culturally speaking.
sacimar (28327) 2012-08-26 7:04
this is a good portrait, it is sad what you say in your note... this is the world we live, I like the partial desaturation you did, well done,
holmertz (58250) 2012-08-26 12:14
I like this photo and I like your description of how it was taken. I think there is always a special atmosphere to the pictures from the part of the world where you once grew up. It seems your identification with the people and environment enables you to capture the human aspects of the area with great sensitivity and understanding. These boys don't look happy but they seem fairly okay and you definitely made their day. The somewhat gloomy colors may have suited the circumstances.
adores (46357) 2012-08-26 17:55
I'm sure their life is not that easy! They look really sad and amazed with your camera. However, the portrait is very good and I'm sure your help was apprecciated, too!
Good work! I like the PP!
Angshu (56760) 2012-08-28 2:06
Not a pleasant sight. Your PP adds a bit of timelessness to this picture, because alas, their poverty stricken plight continues in many Asian countries. Their eyes are wide & curious & with hint of pain in them...no joy visible in those forlorn eyes...I hope they have a better future.
A poignant picture!
mesutilgim (97162) 2012-08-28 9:02
Wonderfull triple portrait wonderfull title ! It's in color but has the taste of an old monochrome print.
TFS and best regards
jhm (158892) 2012-08-29 4:01
Indeed a little bit sarcastic title but I like it very much.
But I like your three double portrait.
A very good composition, excellent presentation.
Nice done, TFS.
Have a nice day,

The look of the childrens gaze the camera and touch the depths of the soul. A shocking picture with children to captivate the viewer and create a variety emotions in everyone. It really touched me this picture.
Thanks for sharing,
macjake (71729) 2012-08-29 22:28
I was in Laos for only a brief time, but I came across the same type of scenes as you show here.
Living in North America, we surely have it good, and its taken for granted by most people everyday.
thanks for this much needed reminder.
wonderful photo and title
delpeoples (59684) 2012-09-01 18:59
My dear NBF
This photo will stay with me for a long time. As beautiful as your landscapes are, this photo has had so much impact on me, and brings a tear to my eye. No child should be living in poverty, so I hope that one day, your photo becomes only a historical document and not a reportage document. Usually, I like photos of kids to be in colour, but the desaturation of this image is totally appropriate for the message you are sending out. Wow, this is what I stay on TE for.
Un abbraccio, and I hope you're behaving yourself
chrisvek (7001) 2012-09-05 11:52
Very good portrait of these kids with great expressions.Superb POV and framework.Very well done!TFS
Have a nice evening
mkamionka (39803) 2012-09-06 13:44
very interesting picture so full of atmosphere.
I like how the children are staring directly at you.
Desaturation enhanced the mood even more, good idea.
Interesting note too,
ACL1978 (7511) 2012-09-07 21:55
I missed this shot when originally posted, Way - too bad, as your shots are few and far between and I hate to miss even one of them.
This is a really affecting shot, and thanks for showing us this side of Cambodia. The expressions on these boys' faces is rather heartbreaking, especially after reading your note.
Good choice to desaturate this, which in some ways actually brightens their faces and certainly gives it a bleaker feel in line with the subject matter. As usual, a careful and thoughtful presentation.
maloutim (9639) 2012-09-08 11:56
A sad photo indeed ! And yet, I would like to think that the look on their faces was that of surprise, of fear of foreigners.
I hope that they were not too hungry if they had rice and bananas to eat, and they had each other to play.
They are beautiful kids anyway, and you captured them very well.
Thanks for sharing.
didemay (2945) 2012-09-23 5:32
I wish I had a magical stick so that I can create a nutritious menu and a peaceful environment for them. Desaturated colors gave a lot meaning to the compo.
nikkitta (17068) 2012-10-23 13:14
Good title for a very good portrait where the desaturated colors give an especial sad mode at the capture
The three of them are looking at the camera, not easy to obtain, well done, my preferred is the one at the middle a lit bit interrogative, or so I suppose
Congrats and TFS
Kielia (24077) 2012-10-25 8:14
I almost missed this interesting photo. This is a wonderful triple portrait of the three boys. I like how they are posing for you (and how they are looking with confidence and skepticism at you); but I read the moving note with great concern. Thanks for sharing!
shevchenko (20548) 2012-11-07 2:12
Artistic photo in sepia color, good portrait shot to show their innocence faces, clear to show the architectures that built with raw materials obtained from plants that growing at their village, interesting composition, distinct photo, well done.
BennyV (20231) 2013-01-10 2:45
Great picture, dear Way. I like the slightly desaturated tones, they create an effect of timelessness. I guess that's very appropriate, as time doesn't seem to have had that much effect on life in those small villages. I wonder how long it will be like that.
All the best.
kabel (1930) 2013-02-14 19:48
Hello, good portrait image with excellentcolors and composition. The photo is a bit controversial.
jemaflor (102213) 2013-02-18 4:37
Nice portraits well taken, interesting glance and brightness for these eyes, good effect with this tone.
