Photographer’s Note
Detail of the carvings from the front wall of the Bayon, Angkor Wat. I've tried to moderate the stark stains & colour variations with some pp work. From 'Canby Publications' website:
"Angkor Thom (Big Angkor) is a 3km2 walled and moated royal city and was the last capital of the Angkorian empire. After Jayavarman VII recaptured the badly damaged Angkorian capital from the Cham invaders in 1181, He began a massive building campaign across the empire, constructing Angkor Thom as his new capital city. He began with existing structures such as Baphuon and Phimeanakas and build a grand enclosed city around them, adding the outer wall/moat and some of Angkor's greatest temples including his state-temple, Bayon, set at the center of the city. There are five entrances (gates) to the city, one for each cardinal point, and the victory gate leading to the Royal Palace area. Each gate, as well as much of Jayavarman VII’s architecture is crowned with 4 giant faces. The South Gate of Angkor Thom is often the first stop on a tour of the temples."

It's not so easy to take this kind of sculpures pictures, with the good composition and light.
And you made it very successfully here, Chris; there is a nice depth in this image, congratulations.

I took a few of this kind of thing, but I don't think any with such fine detail, and this from a scanned print. Very fine quality.

Lindo detalhe, muito informativo, a luz usada deu muita enfase aos relevos. Excelente nota explicativa.
Saudações Chris.

Not always easy to photograph this kind of artwork, but I think this rendition of the intricate details is one of the better examples. Very rich in contrast and textures, and the depicted scenes make for an interestin viewing. Well done, Chris.

Hi Chris,
Nicely presented image and a great note. It was v difficult for me to get a decent image of these carvings since it was either overwhelmed by tourists, or, on second visit, the light wasn't good enough to get a decent result. Travelling without a tripod didn't help my cause much either! :-(
Well done. I hope you were as captivated with that place as me and my family.
Regards,
Vic, Singapore.

A good capture of that aincent artwork - you got the photo with a good light from the side, giving us a lot of shadows in the image - thanks Chris for letting us see this.

Not easy to take, you need the right light to get all the texture and the carvings balanced to each others, you did fine here.
