I have failed in my front portrait shot.
I promised in the note of my previous post of posting a portrait shot from the front, so here it is. You can see the subjects are not giving me the full view that I expected to get. It was early morning at the public square in front of Royal Palace, and sunlight was great! The little girl was so busy running around chasing pigeons. So when I tried to shoot her together with the woman, see what I got.
Let me ask you a question : WHO do you think this woman can be? Her mother? or guardian? or just maid? Tell me why when you state your answer. You can base your answer on this photo alone. Probably mothers with instinctive reflex can give a more convincing reply. And I will tell me my answer at the end of this note. No, she was not unhappy that I shot the little girl. In fact, she was smiling even though hiding behind the little girl.

option 1 - mother. Little girl was dressed in modern style but the mother dressed in simple tradition. He shoes were fine. But would a mother not protect her child instinctively, rather than behind?
option 2 - guardian. She took the girl out for a walk and had a good leisure moment. The least likely in my opinion.
option 3 - maid. Her duty was to take the girl out for morning walk. The girl was well dressed. She dressed in simple manner. Likely? Cambodians employing maids?
Final verdict? I did not ask who they were, so none.

Wonderful scene. Amazing mother and excellent daughter. Nice shot.
KateinDenmark (1634) 2009-05-08 10:44
I guess I don't know the relationship, but this picture struck me as a picture of motherhood. When one becomes a mother, suddenly one's own appearance doesn't matter. It was really strange for me when I had my daughter because I never thought I'd be like that, but I am, and I like it. I always dress my daughter better than I do myself, if I can at all do it. This image you've captured here is and image of a mother's pride - pride at the wonderful life form she is a part of. I really like the photo.
leo61 (0) 2009-05-08 10:58
This is a nice portait of this girl and her proud looking mother.Excellent low POV and great contrast with the nice, partly blurred background.
besnard (56124) 2009-05-08 11:02
Un superbe portrait plein de fraicheur. De l'excellent travail.
Merci pour cette belle image et bonne soirée.
UlfE (14641) 2009-05-08 12:23
A superb portrait. I love the early morning light on the little girl and I have feeling that the woman after all is the proud mother. TFS and have nice weekend!
Jeppo (17645) 2009-05-08 12:25
I don't care who the woman behind the baby is...what I care for is the quality of this shot
excellent light, a cute pleasant smile, a hope for a better future for her...considering the plague Cambodia is suffering!
emka (95073) 2009-05-08 13:22
Hi Bill, Difficult question... (or rather answer :)) Can't guess. Striking thing for me is the quality of girl's dress - shoes, dress, jeans jacket. I do not remember the children looking like that. But I was many years ago so probably it has changed a lot. I do not see much of the woman behind. but i woukld opr it is the mother. Every mother wants to give her children all the best she can, even whe she hardly can afford it. Any way, the portrait is wonderful like that and the girl is so nice. And the wonderful warm light is the main attraction.
cfreire (11741) 2009-05-08 14:52
Splendid shot well composed with the little's expressions very, very natural. Excellent pov and framing. Great job! Regards, Consuelo
angela926 (1884) 2009-05-08 16:19
Nice portrait, lovely colors and nice sharpness, adorable little girl.
ChrisJ (112259) 2009-05-08 19:00
Good use of a shallow dof, in this superb mother & daughter dual portrait. Excellent warm cold colour contrasts, between the blue & yellow attire. Tfs! Have a great weekend!
axiotea (21651) 2009-05-08 21:20
Maybe the woman is the auntie of the little one ;)
You had a very good light which illuminated nicely the kid who seems to be amused (the woman too) and although she is posing, she looks quite natural. The blurred BG gave more impact to your little model...
Have a nice day

Good contrast and well balanced colours.

wonderful portrait with excellent lighting and sharpness,
very well captured!

Hi Bill. Sometimes just a peek is enough, I can see by the eye that she is smiling, and this adds a little mystery to the shot. Wonderful light and colour and excellent critical focus. Well captured and thanks for sharing.
Have a good weekend, Paul.
burraburra (1219) 2009-05-09 2:15
Warm greetings from Sydney, Australia.
Great POV. Colours are excellent making a nice overall contrast. I too very much like the low level of the shot making it more intimate.
I love your note (The final verdict made me laugh). However, I will go for Option 1. It is the mother. Why? Mothers' always want to present their children because they are proud of them. Thsi mother puts her child out in front for you to photograph. Also, if you look closely at the clothing of the mother they are very neat and tidy very much like the young girls, also the mother's shoes are of very good quality. I say it is the Mother.
snunney (97447) 2009-05-09 2:41
What a charming portrait of this little girl with the older one crouching shyly behind, maybe her mother or an older sister. Superb use of depth of field to male them both stand out. Crisp and clear tones. The fact that we can't see all of the person behind adds to the charm in my opinion. Excellent work, thanks for sharing.
Disabled_A (0) 2009-05-09 2:56
IMHO, this lady is neither the girl's mother, nor her guardian, nor a maid. I think she is her grandmother. I compare this with what I see in Moscow. Very often grandmothers and their grandchildren behave and look this way: the little girl being "dressed in modern style but the mother dressed in simple tradition". And grandmothers can look (and be) rather young ;) At 40 a woman can already become a grandmother!
In any case, about the photo itself: I am fascinated by the very warm lighting conveyed in this photo. Their emotions were captured very well. I would call it a "double" portrait because even though we can't see the lady's face fully, we still see part of her face and, indeed, her smile :)
bobocortis (16026) 2009-05-09 3:40
An excellent sharpness in this double portrait.
The low sun gives a very appreciable warm mood.
TopGeo (38216) 2009-05-09 4:40
Hello Bill,It is one still good capture and record of idea and you give this twin portrait! The bigger importance they is the success of your scene the other they is secondary. Important work.
pierrefonds (65244) 2009-05-09 6:17
You have captured well the shy expression of the child and of the mother playing hide and seek with the photographer. The portrait is well framed. The light is well managed and has a good effect on the colors. Have a nice day.
luighi (5297) 2009-05-09 8:35
Excelente retrato Bill , gran encuadre y composicion con colores estupendas y muy bien iluminada , precisoso retrato de vida cotidiana.
Wandering_Dan (3449) 2009-05-09 9:18
Hi, Bill -
Great portrait shot - and it is a front portrait of the little girl. The mother is almost perfectly balanced behind her, and the background is unfocused enough to fill the scene without distracting. The soft light is also used well.
I think she is the mother. Protection is not an issue - unless you see yourself as a threat! To my mind, she was holding her daughter in place so you could get the photo, reassuring her that it was OK. Or as several mothers have said, a mother's pride.
rodgerg (55767) 2009-05-09 10:14
A superb scene with this lovely child and the young lady. An excellent dubble portratit with the expression and the attitudes very well collected. An another excellent photowork in your gallery.
Have a good sunday,
Philippe (11836) 2009-05-09 11:58
Hi, Bill. I would go for the mother here, but I have never had a maid or guardian. Even if we don't see the mother's face fully, I like her look which tells us she seems to be enjoying herself. The little girl seems to be looking for something and her glance is very natural. An excellent DOF makes the girl and the mother stand out very well.
Have a nice weekend,
sayeed_rahman (6370) 2009-05-09 13:43
Hello Bill...i would say there is a hidden impulse and a point of interest..definitely not mother..a maid yes and she is shy for sure..that is why she used the child to hide her face maybe..very candid..youve done well..most of the times you will get results you were not looking for..these results can only be seen throught the lens..it does funny things for sure !
Centered feels static..dont you think ?
phwall (6785) 2009-05-09 15:05
A very sweet photograph, the little girl's expression looks wonderful.
Very good use of the wide aperture to get the shallow DOF.
I like the earthy colour tones, very nice.
jmdias (63350) 2009-05-09 16:02
another interesting and beautiful portrait. I liked the scene, the colors and the light are very nice and the models are with a natural pose. I guess she is the mother, we can see how she is proud of the girl
gunbud (34066) 2009-05-09 20:31
Wonderful capture of the proud mother hiding behind her pride and joy.
Great innocent expression on the young lady's face to go along with the ture colors and excellent sharpness.
dareco (17134) 2009-05-09 22:53
Very sweet!! I think it's her mommy. Even though we can only see a tiny bit of her we can still see the pride. Nice job. TFS
ymrk (15079) 2009-05-10 0:11
Oh,sure!What a affective face with her mother!Very well timing,Bill.

superbe portrait de ce jeune enfant, avec la maman que la rassure, qui se cache derrière elle, très très belle image.
bravo et maitié

Lovely post here. The photography is excellent under both artistic and technical parameters and the the post interesting.
jlbrthnn (76037) 2009-05-10 11:43
Won't I put myself the question to know who is who, perhaps is this your girl and her mother? ;) I am very tenderized by the charming portrait of the little girl, and absolutely allured, by the eye, and the glance of the beautiful young woman. the light is exceptional. The realization is perfect. congratulations.
Have a nice evening
Cricri (117853) 2009-05-10 14:02
Une scéne adorable qui fait sourire tout comme le fait la maman derrière la petite, belle lumière et couleurs, très jolis portraits
Charo (51212) 2009-05-10 15:17
Wonderful portrait with great composition. children will always transmit a sense of tenderness and smiles with his eyes full of innocence. Very nice work done. Bravo!
shevchenko (20390) 2009-05-10 21:28
I do not think she is a maid because what a good duty for the maid to bring the little girl walking in the morning, I think should be her mother because their eyes and ears look similar, just she is shine, thanks for sharing a happiness portrait.
alainh (33201) 2009-05-10 21:59
for me, his mother but not a big importance: just someone who love this little child and who is trying to give the good words. the child is in the light, his mother in the shadow but always here !!
for me, great moments thats the first walkink of my child.
a good day for you, Bill
patdeph (35748) 2009-05-10 23:02
there is no imortance about the woman, what I see is a perfect portrait, where the light and the harmonious colours give something wonderful to the picture!I can add that this is superbly framed, with a splendid blurred background!Congratulations!
AiresSantos (56155) 2009-05-11 3:09
Wonderful colours and POV in this fine portrait. Very well caught the little girl. I like a lot the perfect low DOF
Have a nice week
jafadabret (56501) 2009-05-11 4:45
Je vois seulement que c'est un portrait très réussi avec la petite fille bien sous la lumière alors que l'adulte n'est là que pour la protéger et la mettre en valeur.
danos (96688) 2009-05-11 9:23
nice your first attempt in a portrait with this cute little girl.I think that is a proud mother that hiding behind her daughter, smiling with great pleasure for her little treasure.Well done.
Kielia (24077) 2009-05-11 12:01
what an atmosphere of happiness you have captured here! It is a very beautiful double portrait with the girl standing in the light and her mother (of course she is the mother, obviously being very proud of her little sunshine) in the shadow. Great management of the light and very nice colors. I also like your note very much!
Waylim (25502) 2009-05-12 0:11
The answer is obviously unknown. But judging from the looks, I am very sure they are mother and child. The mother, 1 is very shine and do not want to be in the photo, 2 she is very proud of her beautiful duaghter and want to be in the photo as your model, unlike your thinking of not protecting her, but to actually show her off to you.
Though a maid is also highly probable, it is very common for city folk to have maid from the country side, they don't really paid them much mostly providing food and shelter, and many small town folks will be happy to work there. Some eventually becomes like family. I know of some family in Laos when they escape to Thailand during the Communistic troubling time. They took the maid with them and she now live here in the U.S. independently married with her own family, but still kept a really good relation with her so-call master.
Okay it getting too long this comment. Good photo in all in all. Cheers.
delpeoples (57278) 2009-05-12 5:00
Hey Bill, great double portrait (or should I say 1 1/2 portraits?). The sun beautifully lights the little girl. The image is so sharp and beautifully saturated. The only criticism: you should have asked who these 2 were, you've got my curiosity going now. Best regards and TFS, Lisa
skippy007 (12510) 2009-05-12 16:50
Hello Bill, interesting photo of excellent quality, a beautiful & well dressed child (well captured), the hidden person makes it more interesting & as you said in your well written note raises several questions, why is she hiding behind the child, maybe just camera shy, maybe lacking confidence in herself or her appearance, is it a cultural way that I don't understand. I would say mother, A carer perhaps would not let the child be photographed like this in case the parents would not approve, that's my thinking anyway. Lovely clear shot with beautiful warm colour.
Thank you Bill for this lovely portrait & your interesting note for creating some real thought & discussion.
JCG (35129) 2009-05-13 10:48
Very pretty complicity enters the little girl and her mom. Beautiful moment tenderness. The photograph is of very beautiful quality as well in the light as in the development on the character. Pleasant moment and beautiful portrait, thank you Bill.

No matter what the relationship between them is, they seem to be comfortable with each other, enjoying each other's company.
Liked the look on the cute girl's face.
Bruno40 (6658) 2009-05-14 5:01
nice full body portrait, good colors and sharpness.
I do not know the answer, but they both look great in this photo.

fantastica composizione!I colori fantastici!Perciò volevo darti il centesimo punto!
asajernigan (21427) 2009-05-19 3:41
Nice portrait of this cute little girl. I believe that the woman is probably the mother because of the way she is looking at the girl, you can see the adoration in her eyes.
Your composition is fine closely cropping the shot to only show the subjects. The lighting and colors are fine with excellent sharpness and detail.
lucasgalodoido (22074) 2009-05-19 12:17
muito bonito mesmo esse retrato da garotinha, a iluminação e DOF ficaram ótimos e achei curioso a mãe escondida por trás dela. Belo trabalho.
Parabéns e Abraço

Wonderful shot... Excellent portrait, lighting and good colors. Well done.
PaulVDV (28215) 2009-05-31 12:59
Very beautiful portrait with nice soft colours and a good blurred background.
I like the smile in the eye of the woman hiding behind the child and the fact that the child is more interested in other things happening on the square.
I think the woman is the mother. Although in some countries older sisters very often take care of the younger children. Perhaps not in this case when the child is obviously dressed very well. So I guess the family isn't poor.
Elena (Fanni) could be right too. Perhaps it's the grandmother. I find it very difficult to guess the age of the woman. Anyway she's someone who's very pround on the little girl !
Best regards, Paul

Super picture, this joy and colors!
mozzy27 (2) 2009-11-02 2:06
Love your work, this is simply a beautiful shot of perhaps a proud shy mun showing off her beautiful daugther, but wonderfully captured and good use of the available light.
jusninasirun (17162) 2010-02-22 22:50
Your shooting style changes with the full frame in your hand. They are getting more exciting with carefully controlled framing. Your lenswork are excellent as always and the capture here is so timely with pleasing light.
Will get around to ship your OM2 back to you and hope I can see some excellent full frame filmwork from you later.
Thanks for everything and do take care.
