As we walked up the hill to see the mountain temple called Phnom Krom south of Siem Reap, 1 minute before I shot this photo of Men At Work, there was this one monk at the side taking a sip of tea [not beer, I hope!] from the cold freezer. Perhaps the white man standing was the provider of the drinks? No, I did not speak to any of them although I smiled all the way, and this monk smiled back at me and the camera.
A working monk, yes, building a road up the hill. If I had a chance, I had many questions to ask him, like
.how did he know to build a road?
.where did he learn from?
.he would not get paid? free food, drinks?
.would he go international as NGO?
.could he get married and have children?
But obviously I need not ask him if I can publish his photo, the answer is on his smiling face. I have seen monks praying, walking, begging but never building a road on a mountain slope under the hot sun! On your way to Tonle Sap Lake, the Phnom Krom mountain is on your right. Three old Angkor temples sit atop the mountain and we were here to check out sunset scenery.
:-) On a lighter note : I posted this demure girl selling drinks at the foothill leading up the road to this monk's scene at the same place at the same time, and hope that he would not be distracted in his concentration! Physically located perhaps on the same website server disc storage! but different URL so he couldn't trace it? What do you think?

Un homme souriant, net sur un flou artistique. Il te regarde avec beaucoup de bienveillance.
Merci pour cette belle image et bonne journée.

He seems happy. Very good capture and a picture very well done. Don't they drink beer? Probably not, yes?

A good capture of this monk earning a well earned break and enjoying a refreshing drink. His smile is quite infectious. Well composed with good colours and sharpness.

His face answered all the questions and what a happy face as you can see here. Your recent gallery is full of striking orange robes and this image is nicely registered in shallow depth. The flask and empty glasses balances well to where he is sitting. Nicely RAWed for TE and TFS.

what a combination of colours! incredible! :)
very nice portrait, good composition. I like it very much.
Concerning the other photo on TL, I also like it ;) Why didn't you post it here?
PS. I have one question to you: HOW do you manage to combine your activities both on TL and TE? I tried that last year but very quickly I understood that I can't mamage both! simply no time and energy...

Impressive capture of bare foot monk while resting his break after hard work. Your capture is excellently framed and focused in rich, well contrasted colors there. I liked his pure pose with glass of juice and friendly smile, eye contact that already made your photo a priceless one. Congratulations.

The road builder and also a monk have strong limbs, there have many types of monks around the world, famous like Dalai or the other one teaching KungFu in US. Good discover to this monk at the road side, informative note, thanks for sharing.

foozi (7101) 2009-04-10 3:36
your monk series are lovely. The most interesting thing is that their robes will definitely be attractive in the dark background. Like tis one, the contrast is excellent in pushing the composition to be a nice one.
Besiades that, the friendly smiles add value to your well composed shot.
NB: Well lately Jusni and i seem to be given the same responsibilities together. so we exploit the situation and enjoyed shooting at some length.

I mainly like the happy epression of his face you've captured.

Très plaisante la complémentarité de couleurs entre l'orange et le bleu du seau.Cet homme a l'air d'avoir du plaisir à faire la pose.
phwall (6785) 2009-04-10 13:15
Only positive comments now, I've learnt my lesson, I've been flogged by my peers.
A lovely serene capture, so simple yet so powerful. Just looking into that monks face makes me glad to be alive. Suddenly all the trivial bits and pieces that cause me stress and blood pressure dissappear when I see his smile.
For me, I think this is one of your best, a wonderful capture.
papagolf21 (102064) 2009-04-10 13:45
Bonsoir, cher Bill,
J'ai l'impression qu'il y a eu une communication instinctive entre toi et le moine pour obtenir ce résultat.
Comme à l'accoutumée, mission réussie à tous points de vue.
ribeiroantonio (22637) 2009-04-10 19:26
You really got a big smile saying that it was OK to take him on picture. The compo is very good and the colours are nice in spite what I think was not the best of the light. Well done.

Hello Bill, A very beautiful & well balanced image but I think it's the smile & expression on this Monk's face that makes this image very special, an expression & look of complete contentment, a moment well captured.
Happy Easter to you & your loved ones.
lestans (17168) 2009-04-11 9:04
what a kind lovely smile! A resting and smiling monk, very friendly, in a gorgeous composition in orange and blue.
(I always ask myself how can such people walk bare feet on such stones!)
Budapestman (82620) 2009-04-12 10:16

Good use of a shallow dof, on the tea drinking monk, with a wonderful colour combination of orange, blue, & red. I think the hill is called Pnomh Kram? If you search my gallery, you'll find a shot from the summit. Tfs!

I'm just back from my Easter trip to nothern Italy and I'm slowly trying to catch up with the numerous TE friends photos postend during my absence....
This one is a fine capture indeed, simple but very expressive.
It reminds me of a joke I knew: "in a mine the head of a team of workers was checking the work when he saw a man sitting down while all the others were working hard. "Hey you, what are you doing?" Shouted the head. The man answered calmly and naively: "Well I seem that in sitting I can rest better!".

Wonderful portrait of this monk stares while you take your drink and you spent an evening smile.

J'aime beaucoup le portrait de ce moine qui prend un moment de repos. Le sourire est celui de quelqu'un de sympathique qui apprécie les joies de la vie.
Bonne composition et excellentes couleurs.

Olá Bill, excellent daily life capture and very enjoyable smiling face. Good focus on him and nice contrast with the whitish background. The whole set is great - the blue basket makes a nice balance of color with his orange rob.
axiotea (21651) 2009-05-19 22:38
When I looked at the photo in ws, I can understand better why you have liked Sieam Reap ;)))
I like to see the amused expression of the monk having a break with his mini bar next to him...
I might have cropped a bit of the top part...but not sure ;)
Have a nice day
Waylim (25502) 2009-05-20 0:13
this is a very nice shot, I like it, even the light is strong but you managed it well with not over exposing it. I can see the humidity and the heat, his forehead is glistening with sweat.
I wouldn't be to surprised if he is drinking beer ;) Some monks in parts of Laos that I know off, very often they are just ordinary folks who served as monkhood of a few weeks or months, so I have seen some of them smoke, use cell phone, not drinking beer, at that I know of anyway. I guess if they are serious they would have give up all that...
Urs (14082) 2009-08-19 5:55
As I wrote, I had a look at your gallery, it's really very varied and colorful. Good question, what is the monk drinking? And he is building a road, interesting, monks normally do not do such manual labor. What so ever, your pictures has perfect sharpness and the colors are very vibrant. The stone in the BG adds to DOF a lot, well done
