Photographer's Note
.
I shot this picture on the street in front of Angkor Hospital for Children. The child sleeps with empty stomach while his mother fails to produce milk, because she is hungry, too. The kid waits for the breasts to activate, and the mother waits for a miracle.
More than one third of Cambodians live below the poverty line, struggling to survive on less than $1 a day. Poverty is especially pervasive in rural areas and among children, who constitute more than half of the country’s population. Cambodia has the highest infant and under-five mortality rates in the region, at 97 and 141 per 1,000 live births, respectively. Vaccine-preventable diseases, diarrhoea, and respiratory infections are among the leading causes of childhood death. Maternal mortality is also high.(Source)
According to CARE, tonight, millions of children will go to bed hungry. In poor communities around the world, whether due to drought, conflict or disease, mothers and fathers will not be able to find enough food for their families. It's any parent's worst nightmare.
Every minute of every day, somewhere in the world, 21 children die of malnutrition and preventable diseases. Even when it doesn't kill, chronic malnutrition can cause blindness, deformities and brain damage. That's the shocking truth. But we don't have to accept it. We can choose to stop it.

Hello
This is very dramatic
it reeminds me od some of Nygus' african shots,
the closeness is very harsh and allows us to get unconfortably close to this tragic reality
Well done
Regards
Daniel

Looking at this photo, I am thinking about a UNICEF poster. Your tight composition makes the success.
God bless!

Hi Thanh,
Without your note it is very much a warm picture of peace and security, but you bring the harsh reality into the scene very well.
Good intimate portrait.

While the kid's mother was "looking for a miracle" to be able to feed her child, in civilized country the father abandoned the little Pumpkin in a second country and escaped to a third country.
It's sad that everywhere, children are first to be victims of adults.

Thanh,
most of your posts are so explicite and painful - that we as viewers seem to loose words while technically or artistically trying to comment on them - because even a word as 'sad' is useless and meaningless here - this post is highly unconfortable and cuts like a well sharpened knife ...
this image hurts - and it very well should
:(

fantastic shot. I like the combination of nearness of mother and child, and the harsh reality.
