This is a road...a red road, untarred and dusty...part of the ‘highway’ from Poipet (Thailand-Cambodia border) to Siem Reap (Angkor), a journey which lasted 3 hours and cost us USD 60.00.
Picture taken from the front seat of a taxi..not very easy since the taxi was really dirty on the outside & so was the front glass (full of mud marks splattered all over the glass, complete with wiper marks). A lot of dirt & dust marks are still visible in the picture, even though I tried & removed a lot of them.
I liked the clouds...looks like stacks, above the unspoilt countryside.
In a WS, I decided to add some contrast, so that the road looks redder & the sky bluer..Definitely looks more visually appealing & maybe covers a few blemishes on account of the dirt on the glass.
So why have I posted this 'blemished' picture today? I was trying whether it's still possible to see the beauty of the setting through the blemishes.
And also I’m taking the road..that’s why! off for a few days..to Bali with my wife.
And to state how I feel, I quote a loose translation of a wonderful Bengali (my mother tongue) song, which I have taken liberty to make some improvisations, but tried keeping the essence of it....rhyming is totally missing, but the words are intact. (Dear Bengali critiques – please excuse this adventure of mine with Ami Ek Jajabor)
I call it my wishful thinking!
I am a gypsy, a traveller
I’ve forgotten my own home, because Mother Earth has called on me
I’ve travelled from River Ganges, through the Mississippi & seen the beauty of Volga
From Ottowa through Austria and felt the dust of Paris on me
I’ve picked up colors from Ellora and took them to far away Chicago..
I’ve listened to the poems of Ghalib sitting on a minarette in Tashkent...
And read stories of Maxim Gorki, sitting next to the tomb of Mark Twain
Time and again the attraction for the road is so intense for me
that I have made Road my home
That's why I am a gypsy, a traveller
Take care & keep well, my friends

Excellent perpective and red road, I like to much the contrast with clouded sky. Many regards, Rafael
robertosalguero (246) 2006-07-14 0:56
Not much you can do about a moving vehicle and dirty glass. The picture is very nice nevertheless and the contrast of colours is appealing to the eye.
barrufeto_77 (28886) 2006-07-14 1:14
Excellent colours! It's a pity that the picture needs a little bit sharpness but, anyway, I like it.
leo61 (0) 2006-07-14 1:35
Great shot, well done through the taxi`s window.Good perspective and depth and a wonderful sky.Nice to see the people on the bicycles in front .
besnard (53786) 2006-07-14 1:39
Joli cliché de cette route rouge qui a l'air bien poussireuse. Les nuages ont des formes très artistiques.
Merci pour le partage.
emjleclercq (15780) 2006-07-14 2:11
I agree with the beauty of the sky, although the dust is unfortunatly still noticeable in a few parts even after you cleaning work. The bicycles are a good topic, you should try to use them another time in better conditions.
Have a nice time in Bali and all the best,
kskarabilgin (163) 2006-07-14 2:12
Good shot. the taxi was really dirty.
orme (7215) 2006-07-14 2:41
Excellent shot, Angshuman - especially as it was through a taxi window.
The contrasting colours are great - as is the sky.
I also like the perspective of this shot.
Well seen and captured.
Graal (98267) 2006-07-14 3:05
nice view and the composition. Unusual colour of sand, great sky. I like it. Good note also. Well done photo.
pranab (5354) 2006-07-14 3:11
the picture might not have the highest quality but it has the heart of the photographer etched into it. nice colors.
as far as bhupen hazarika's song goes i think you have done quite a grand job. have a great time in bali.
jinju (14265) 2006-07-14 3:35
I feel like you really captured a very nice composition here. Unfortunately there is technical issues with this shot. IThe dirt arks not so much as the strange blurring around the cyclists.
papagolf21 (86952) 2006-07-14 3:46
Henryk_Bilor (20799) 2006-07-14 3:50
I wanted to criticise you, but first I read your note and now I understand the cause for the dirt ;). Besides it it is great capture of the road with cyclist. Great perspective and colours. The kind of pictures I like best.
imrek (4) 2006-07-14 3:54
very nice painting effect, classical composition, great colours of road and nature...well done!!!
sabyasachi1212 (19773) 2006-07-14 4:17
This road reminds me of Birbhum, very similar colours. Yes I like the clouds too, beautiful pattern there. Have a nice trip, have fun and bring back lots of images for us.
PS : By the way, if you are ever looking for an alternate profession, try literature. Your translation of Ami Ek Jajabar is top notch.
markstaples (15670) 2006-07-14 4:23
I love the composition and the colours and this wonderful sky. But as has been mentioned above, there is quite a lot of blurring. I hope you don't mind me saying this.
oochappan (16957) 2006-07-14 4:30
Excellent qua perspective converging road, the enormous cloudy sky and the two persons on their bicycle aside.
The shot suffers from less quality seeing all the spots and lesser sharpness that can be seen as a nice mood but also as slobby.
PixelTerror (0) 2006-07-14 4:57
What I like here is the perspective of this warmly colored road and the 3D effect of the clouds coming back. It looks a bit like a film scene. On the other way I have to agree with Rafal the blur significantly reduces the attractivity of this scene.
Have a nice week end,
pierrefonds (57915) 2006-07-14 5:29
A good POV of this red road and of the clouds, the photo is sharp and clear. It has a good DOF and nice colors. It is not always easy to take photos. Thanks for sharing.
Gerrit (48948) 2006-07-14 5:41
Looks like a 19th century painting. Good work to leave the marks of the mud. The colours are beautiful and so is the composition.
carper (96) 2006-07-14 5:50
a very nice one Angshuman,
very good taken shot, the atmosphere is great with the dusk of the car, the perspective is very good and the colours and the great sky made it perfect, good work of the photographer, my compliments.
riclopes (35577) 2006-07-14 6:03
What a lovely traveller atmosphere, along with the note that give more strengh to the image. In fact, the blur issue doesn't bother me at all (in fact I think that with time, thecnical issues are getting less important in my mind) and it works well with the scene movie that Jean Yves say. I would think of a other options, as sepia and b/w, though...Although I'm much more a lover of color versions.
The strong perspective is great and the cloudy sky is amazing.
I think I prefer this version than the more sturated one.
I don't know if you will post any more, before leaving, but if not, have a safe trip to Bali, my friend.
All the best,
yanseiler (20) 2006-07-14 6:27
Hi Angshuman, a very nice composition, the colors are very shiny (maybe a bit oversaturated and those rows of clouds are great, too bad the picture has some kinds of dirts on it...
ChrisJ (100052) 2006-07-14 6:32
I like the diminishing linear perspective of the red dirt road. Looks a little like outback Australia. Well done!
berek (40015) 2006-07-14 8:24
what a wonderful blue. I like your perspective with long way. have a nice weekend.
Meaning Sense :-))
sayan (2617) 2006-07-14 8:44
I tell you Angshu da, you are a top class translator! Ohh.. I really love your translation "Ami ek jajabaur!". A great song which goes with this pic very aptly!
Your picture reminds me of "Rangamatir Desh" (The country of red soil) - Birbhum, as Sabyasachi had already mentioned! This picture might be technically not that good, but it does not bother me at all. Who wants to go to the technical details when there is such a nice composition in front! Not me, atleast. I really love this one from you. Everything is so beautiful-starting from the sky, the cloud patterns, the two bicycles and to the infinite road!
Have a great trip to Bali.
jhm (140585) 2006-07-14 8:57
Indeed we can see the unwashed glass, but the I like the composition generally, very well sky with these lovely clouds.
Very well done!
Have a nice weekend,
ramesh_lalwani (3211) 2006-07-14 11:18
Red rod with blue sky adds lovely combination.Your workshop looks better
feather (51130) 2006-07-14 11:23
I don't care about the blur; your reasons for posting it are clear and it is a very apt post. It's a fantastic sky and the perspective of the road leads us straight to it.
devimeuxbe (58557) 2006-07-14 11:27
I like this nice picture from cambodia. You get a nice cloudy sky and the colors are great with the road. Nice composition with the bicycle. It's very well done
tcht (7565) 2006-07-14 13:24
Actually I'm thinking of going to Angkor Wat too :)
Technical quality of your pic isn't that good due to dirt on windscreen but you're shown good daily life elements. The bycicle and the orange road works well. Good documentary.
Wish you a nice trip Bali,
plimrn (21344) 2006-07-14 19:55
As you know, I love clouds. The photo is very well framed with the the cyclists along the red road; the masses of clouds in the blue sky provide wonderful contrast.
ndb1958 (9289) 2006-07-15 5:14
what a great perspective on the red road and the beautiful wide and cloudy sky. Reminds me to Feininger's famous b+w image from Route 66 with the wide sky. Great composition. A little pitty about the blowing dust you mentioned to Rafal. Nevertheless the compo is superb.
I wish you a great time in Bali. Can't wait to see your pictures from there.
veve (4189) 2006-07-15 6:14
I like very much this picture!
Looks like a painting!
Excellent colors and composition!
capthaddock (28790) 2006-07-15 22:16
Hi Angshu - I understand the taxi conditions, and the WS is also Ok as far as colours and contrast, but there is still a serious image quality problem here, this would have been great if the noise filter had not spoilt the fg, and had a better job of removing noise from the sky, maybe better if you selectively resharpened the bottom part after reducing the size for web, just an idea. Have fun in Bali, sorry I have a pale green for this ;-)
sebinho342 (19317) 2006-07-16 12:39
Hi Angshu, good picture, a dreamy one, incitating to evasion, i like it .. even if it could have been a little bit sharpnessed, beautiful clouds and i like the red color of the road :)
TeresaT (10806) 2006-07-16 13:28
Beautiful POv and sense of depht on this one.
I like the warm tone of the sand road.
The sky with the white clouds lokks amazing.
A very good one.
josepmarin (57831) 2006-07-16 14:46
When I have watched the photo I have thought that had much noise and spots, that it had little quality. But I have read your note and I have understood everything to it. It is not lack of quality, it is excess of dirt in the crystal of the taxi.
The image that you show to us is very pretty, with great perspective of this red highway that takes the glance to us until the line of the horizon. The two people with bicycle give much action and life to the photo.
And the sky, that fantastic sky with beautiful clouds that all the frame fills almost, it is a wonder.
Done very well.
Cretense (68691) 2006-07-16 15:30
What a superb photo, Angshu, besides the "technical problems. Perfect composition and wonderful colours. Gives me the sensation of freedom, makes me wanna be a gypsy as you write in your excellent note. Congratulations!
Face__Man (56) 2006-07-16 20:47
Hey there, good perspective and great colours. The blemishes are unfortunate but I would rather see what you saw and not what Photoshop would have us see. It’s most unfortunate that you had to pay $60USD for the cab ride. I took it back in November and it only cost me $45USD which was split three ways! Oh well, happy travels.
rosaline (0) 2006-07-17 4:01
This is an excellent shot under the circumstances. I hate trying to take pictures from moving vehicles as it is so difficult and I usually delete all of them. The picture is nice balanced and composed here and the sky looks fantastic. Good shot.
postvikram (1199) 2006-07-19 11:17
This is a beautiful image.
Nicely captured. The sky is excellent and so is the redness of the road.
The noise removal has given this pic an artistic look. This looks like a painting. The dust and speckles are not spoiling the look of the picture.
Very good note- Have a great time at Bali - Vikram
sergio1 (12152) 2006-07-26 5:27
Wonderful sky and depht. its work is good but I believe that it needs a little sharp
I like it, greeting
Filko (1134) 2006-07-27 13:23
nice contrast..red road and blue sky..well taken...and so simple...
photofarm (468) 2006-07-28 14:27
Yeah, I remember this red road! How many missed picture...I was on the taxi, but next time I'll use a pick-up!
Thank's for sharing!
lu_muratori (618) 2006-08-07 4:15
Hi Angshu, what a cool photo! the sky looks just great!
I have been on this very road, 6 years ago.
Take care man,
john_c (24662) 2006-08-09 1:00
A well composed and colourful shot of this road journey. The dynamics are superb, with the viewer even taking in the dust. The cyclists really make the scene, which is enhanced by the large dreamy sky. I also like the DOF here and the view of distant fields. Very well captured.
RADEEH (2802) 2006-08-11 12:12
Now we know you are a poet too....
Excellent shot for that note.
Congrats and TFS
prumod (8300) 2006-08-14 11:17
it is really nice angshuman...
its blur effect is very attractive...
Stepan (27210) 2006-08-29 15:12
I suppose this was a great moment, magic and rare. The colors are strong and beautiful and the depth perfect. But I regret the really bad definition.
hoorge (1434) 2006-09-06 21:23
The red colored dirt road captured my attention when I was viewing your thumbnails. Apart from the abundance of cloud coverage and the dirt road, the picture is lacking clarity and definition. I would have liked to see the actual dirt as seen on the windshield as it would have made it more real. The pov is good but the picture is not quite solid.
CliffW (2377) 2006-09-07 0:51
Ah, this road. This road tried to kill me! I was there, with a crazy driver, a couple of weeks after you on the way to Sisophon from Siem Reap. I have to say that the red levels show a bit too much contrast. While this road doesn't offer a lot of outstanding subject matter, I think you did a decent job of showing what actually IS there (or isn't there, which may be the real point). While I think the focus could be better and would rather not see as much saturation, I'm giving you a point for being able to hold on to the camera at all! Frankly, my head was banging against the inside of the roof that it was my vision that was out of focus...
chrisnet (21092) 2006-09-07 7:44
Very nice shot,I like the perspective and colors, the cloudy sky is very impressive.Very well composed and seen.Very well the bycicles in the foregroud.Good work.
sothy81 (9568) 2006-11-25 12:36
Hi Angshuman, yes this is the one that is similar to mine. Great shot Angshuman. I like it. The cloud is so special too. Great. Sothy, later
edal (6804) 2006-11-29 15:24
Indeed, remarkable clouds! A good color contrast with the red road... A good presentation of life in those places...
pastadog (13111) 2007-01-17 4:22
This is beautiful, Angshu! Incredible depth, colors; a perfect scene with the two bikes - and the clouds are amazing, regards, Daniel
brevbrev14 (140) 2007-01-23 8:27
this image is excellent!
you loose a bit of sharpness, but it is a wondeful image, with a great perspective and colours..
The bikers are the cherry on the cake!
pady (4800) 2007-02-14 15:57
I was surprised by the quality before I read the note and then understood better why. Despite of the quality I like the composition for the nice perspective.
abulafia (4900) 2007-03-06 12:26
Yes it is a little ruined with the mud and the places where you tried to repair it.
But i do understand why you shared it anyway, it is definately a good shot with great colors and a marvelous sky.
zips (1958) 2007-06-28 5:27
I suppose you could have cloned out the chips in the windscreen but I think the imperfections in the glass add character to the photo.
It is a bit over saturated for my taste though, a small thing to change.
