Photographer's Note

Among the old stone structures and ruins of Banteay Srei, one finds almond shaped, dark brown, wide eyed children who follow you everywhere you go.

Sometimes, they tell you the history behind the temples; sometimes they beg you to buy their wares from them – postcards, scarves, little bronze buddhas, or purple water lilies from the nearby pond.

When you part, they put their hands together, and bow to you; leaving one with a most precious souvenir: the smile on their faces.

When I saw them through this doorway, I thought: what a pretty picture - made more interesting by the striking contrasts between the colour of their attires. It was as if the picture was in its natural frame instantly!

Of course, this picture will always remain, like many other things in Cambodia: framed in my memory.
