The Independence Monument, Phnom Penh Photo

Photographer’s Note

Taking pictures in Phnom Penh at night is actually a bit dangerous... It is not adviced to go out in the evening with valuables on you because the city's crime rate is quite high, to say the least!(I once saw a Cambodian guy shot dead ten meters away from me!!!) But I could not resist the temptation... I stopped shortly and didn't take many shots (pack everything quick and go!) Being close made me miss out some depth of field, and the top of the structure is not so sharp... but it is the best I managed!

This is the Independence Monument, it was built in 1958 following the country's independence from France.

Prendre des photos de nuit à Phnom Penh n'est pas si simple... Il est déconseillé de sortir la nuit avec des valeurs... Le pays n'est pas encore vraiment stabilisé et les crimes (à main armée) sont nombreux (J'ai une fois vu un Cambodgien prendre deux balles, une dans le thorax et une dans la tête, puis tomber raide mort à dix mètres de moi!!!)
Mais je n'ai pu résister à la tentation... Je me suis arrêté brièvement, pris quelques photos vite fait, puis remballé le matos!) Le fait d'être près du sujet m' diminué la profondeur de champ, et le haut de l'édifice n"est pas si net.. mais c'est la meilleure que j'ai fait de cet endroit!

C'est le Monument de l'Indépendance , construit en 1958 pour célébrer la libération de la "tutelle" Française.

Hehe! En regardant la galerie, je me suis dis, 'tiens je connais ce monument!'
Les jets d'eau colorés captent le regard et j'aime leur rendu 'figé' grâce aux 30s. C'est vrai que tu aurais pu avoir plus de netteté sur l'édifice mais c'était difficile d'avoir de recul à cause de la route (d'où tu risquais de te faire tailler un short)...
Tu as fait bon usage de mon 10-20mm et trépied ;))))

Bonjour Laurent,

Il va falloir demander une autorisation de débordement de points aux administrateurs pour pouvoir t'accorder déjà les 2 points habituels pour cette superbe photo et ce beau résultat dans ce contexte difficile et un autre nombre indéterminé pour le fait de n'avoir pas résisté à la tentation (mais prudence quand même)

Mais j'avoue que cela aurait été dommage de ne pas la prendre, c'est tout simplement génial, la compo, les couleurs et touts ces détails que le fond sombre met super bien en valeur, ça vaut plus que deux sourires...
Passe une belle soirée ( fait attention quand même la prochaine fois)

you have right about the danger to have someone in the streets of Phnom Penh,as the same told us our guide in Cambodia.By these circumstances your spectacular shot is great as the tree mauve beams of light contrast perfect with the illuminated the monument of Independence.Well done.

c'est vrai,ça manque un peu de netteté,mais les couleurs et la composition sont si belles que ça compense largement!Et puis dis donc,ton récit ne donne pas franchement envie de visiter Phnom Penh,et la photo n'en a que plus de valeur!

Bonsoir Laurent,

Et ben, ce n'est pas sans risque les prises de vues nocturnes !!! En tous les cas, mêle s'il y a un léger manque de netteté, et on comprend pourquoi... Une belle photo colorée où ces 3 jets d'eau du premier plan font penser à les boosters de fusée à l'envers, attention décollage immédiat !!! Agréable vue de nuit, merci Lautent.

Shot dead ten meters away from YOU...my god! Yes I was about to comment on the uncharacteristic lack of crispness which we see in your shots in this one, but your note gives sufficient reason for it. The light is good and you managed the exposure well with the tripod ..

Tu joues les correspondants de paix et guerre... La prise de risque est inconsidérée, mais la photo est considérable. La composition est fort bien faite, avec des couleurs superbes étagées en profondeur. Une très belle image de la nuit très présente, qui met les couleurs en avant. Bravo.
