Photographer's Note

General elections were held in Cambodia on 28 July 2013. Prime Minister Hun Sen's CPP, who has been in power for 28 years, won 68/123 seats, compared with 55/123 for the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), which is led by Sam Rainsy.

Hun Sen is one of the former Khmer Rouge army commanders who overthrew Pol Pot's regime of terror. He was (and is) backed by neighbouring Vietnam. Although there are serious claims of corruption and nepotism, his rule has brought a fair degree of stability to the country.

Sam Rainsy is the country's populist opposition leader, who has just returned after a period of (enforced) exile in France and America. With fierce anti-Vietnam rhetoric and promises of wealth, he is very popular among young people and in cities.

Today Cambodia's parliament has approved a new five-year term for long-serving PM Hun Sen, despite a boycott by the opposition, who continue to protest over alleged cheating during the elections. They have demanded an independent inquiry into election results and have been absent from parliament since it reopened.

This picture shows a voter's hand. Having cast the vote, every voter dips his/her index finger into ink to make sure no one votes twice. Thus preventing at least this kind of fraud.

On a personal note I just hope peace and common sense prevail.
Cambodia has seen enough hard times.
