The same dzong as here and the same bridge as here

The original roofed wooden cantilever bridge, built together with the Dzong in the 17th century, had a span of approximately 35 meters; it was washed away by a flood in 1968. The new roofed bridge will also be constructed entirely of wood, but will have to have a span of almost 55 meters (a great technical challenge!) due to the widening of the river by the mentioned flooding. With a width of 3 meters the bridge will be for the use of persons and cattle only.
The bridge will be instrumental at the coronation of the new King of Bhutan, His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, in the Punakha Dzong, forseen for 2008, who was given the responsibility of head of State on Dec. 14th 2006. The bridge will also play a prominent role during the celebrations of the jubilee „100 Years Wangchuck Monarchy“ during the course of 2008.

The Punakha Dzong was constructed by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in 1637-38. It is the winter home of Bhutan's Central Monk Body led by the Je Khenpo.

In 1907, Punakha Dzong was the site of the coronation of Ugyen Wangchuck (or Deb Nagpo) as the first King of Bhutan. Three years later, a treaty was signed at Punankha whereby the British agreed not to interfere in Bhutanese internal affairs and Bhutan allowed Britain to direct its foreign affairs.

In 1987, the dzong was partially destroyed by fire.
Due to its location at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers in the Punakha-Wangdue valley, the dzong is vulnerable to flash flooding caused by glacier lakes (GLOF). According to a recent report, flash flood damage to Punakha Dzong occurred in 1957, 1960 and 1994.

Punakha is the administrative center of Punakha dzongkhag, one of the 20 districts of Bhutan. Punakha was the capital of Bhutan and the seat of government until 1955, when the capital was moved to Thimphu. It is about 72 km away from Thimphu and it takes about 3 hours by car from the capital Thimphu.

Andrzeg,
Once again another great image, I like this one even more because the river and sky add much more to this composition. The purple flower tree also add more colors to this very serene and majestic landscape and temple. Technically, perfect sharpness and clarity so peaceful with great sense of tranquility. Excellent composition with beuatiful light and soft and natural colors. I love it. Thanks

Hello Andrzej,
A fine shot of this fantastic building. Very soft, mild colours. Maybe you were lucky to have a partially cloudy sky. I was in Punakha but in the autumn, so I didn't get to see the blossoming jacarandas. They look great.
Regards,
Gert
