The king of Bhutan Jigme Singye Wangchuck, coronated on June 1974, is a king who made a lot of difference in Bhutan and Bhutanese people's lives. During his past 33 years of ruling he emphasized education, health services, enviromental conservation and communication. (All the children in Bhutan learn English as a foreign language. It is a real shock for visitors like me to have a conversation in English to a 10-year old. Bhutan has a major income from the exploitation of forests, but every measure is taken for the replacement of the cut trees.)
Recently, King of Bhutan has made a decision to hold first parliamentary elections. The former king will abduct his throne in favour of his son in December the first general elections will be held in 2008. The date is decided by the royal astrologers. What is very interesting is that the news followed that the Bhutanese people had raised their voice against the election and declared that they were very happy with their king. The king who, more than 30 years ago, declared that "Gross National Happiness is more important than Gross National Product."
