Dzongs are built of stone walls and wooden roofs. Multicolored paintings on woodworks and carvings inside and outside dzongs and Bhutanese houses are very common. Drawing and painting are called lhazo and includes religious pictures, wall paintings and decorative paintings. The geometric proportions and iconography are essential to Buddhist art.
The inside courtyard of Punakha Dzong is no different than other dzongs with all the lively colors.
What is also very mportant to remember is that everything is in gigantic proportions in a the dzong. For the building to look even larger than it actually is dzong walls are inward-sloping. On the inside as well the grandeur continues. I think the presence of the monk on the photo adds a little perspective on how big every detail is. |
