This candid shot of an old man was taken in the town square of Wangdue Phodrang in the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan. I would have liked to have got more of the out-of-focus woman carrying a baby on her back within the frame on the left, but I had to crop to remove a shoulder of someone that got in the way. The town square was quite crowded, and I was trying to take a shot of this old man from across the other side of the square with a 200 mm lens – but people kept walking in the way as soon as he was half looking my way.
He was wandering around the square with his hands behind his back, quietly observing the other townspeople coming and going. Maybe the look on his face represents a realisation that he getting towards the end of his life cycle, whilst observing the children and mothers with babies around him who are just starting theirs. That was the thought that crossed my mind as I observed him.
