[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Life in rural Bhutan is difficult. In many ways it made me think of life in the American west at the time of the pioneers--subsistence farming with animal power and minimal tools. A lot of time spent plowing fields and removing rocks. Cold winters in poorly heated homes. Low population density, with reliance on neighbors for mutual help. Signs of religious devotion. There is not the desperation one might see in the crowded shantytowns of Africa, because as long as one is able to work hard relentlessly, life should be OK.

But the harshness does take its toll. Though this boy can't have been more than four years old, his face appeared to bear the burdens of a lifetime, at least on the cold winter morning when I took this shot.

Hi Ken,
this is a very nice picture, maybe a little too dark, but very well framed.

The blue tones make it appear cold, the light works on his face, a nice compo Ken.

Hello Ken -

Nice image and excellent eye contact. The image is just a bit dark and could use brighting a bit.

Thank you for sharing

This is top notch photography Ken. I love how the whole scene has an almost colorless look to it, except for the boys face with his bright red checks. He seems confident and shy at the same time. He's looking straight into the camera, but he's also halfway hiding behind the fence post. I hate to repeat myself, but this is a great shot. The note was great too.

Hi Ken
lovely portrait of this little and shy girl.
The frame is excellent, the face expressive.
It's a nice composition
Well done
Bertrand

Ken: I must admit I think your scan is quite good. And the photo is quite able to stand on its own legs: simple color palette and expressive. regards, c

IT's nice to go into different cultures where people are more relaxed about being photographed, unlike in Europe or North America (where someone would probably call the police if they saw you taking a picture of a child!). Good lighting and as you say, wonderful expression!

A very good one so tipycal of this remote country. The boy in his traditional costume looks very curious. A great daily life shot.

Hello Ken ! I can see that you made him curious probably wondering what tool you had and what on earth was so interesting about him. I almost thought he was a "she". Yes life must be hard on this corner of the world and I can see what you mean having a closer look at his pretty face. I like the almost "missing" colors bringing out a very special mood. Wonderful. Barbara.

Hello Ken,
Depiction of the face of gallant boy is exquisite, and the reduced exposure concentrates my attention on his face. the tonality is also indeed wonderful.
Have a nice day, Hisashi
