On a journey through Asia in the early 70's I spent a couple of weeks in the new nation of Bangladesh, established only one year earlier with Indian assistance through a war against Pakistan.
Bangladesh was a quite exciting experience with a tremendous atmosphere of wild expectations and optimism. It was also very chaotic, the infrastructure being heavily damaged from the war, making travelling complicated and time-consuming. From the western city of Khulna I had to travel by a very overloaded boat to Dhaka, a journey of about 36 hours. Considering the number of accidents on the Bangladeshi waterways, it was possibly one of the most dangerous journeys I have ever made.
This picture, scanned from a Kodachrome slide, was taken in early December 1972 somewhere in the Ganges delta in southern Bangladesh.

so old photo and still so nice. Your scan is well made.
I think it was great experience to be in Bangladesh in 70th, don´t you have more photos from your journey? Your sailing moment has very pieceful atmosphere and looks like from a dream.

WoW! This one is 7 years older than me!
You found an elegant light in the banks of Bangladesh. I guess, this was a magical moment. TFS,

Belle qualité de scan. C'est un cliché intéressant et exotique avec le vent qui gonfle la voile et la luminosité qui donne des teintes douces ā l'ensemble.
Merci pour le partage et bonne journée.

Now you´re really painting the map! This is a very good picture with the low sunshine on the sail and the palms in the background. Maybe the boat is too much centered.

The colors are still there and working out surprisingly well. sun set the sail as they saying. like the black parts of the sail that gives the comp some extra go and breaks up the boat a bit.

Hi Gert! So simple and so beautiful. Colors and light are perfect (old, wonderful slides!) and you can hear the splash of the paddle!
Thanks for sharing!

En helt annan värld! Måste ha varit ett äventyr att resa på det här viset, ingenting för moderna charterturister.

Gert, you made my heart beat faster as I saw this photo, I was in that country a few years later - from 1978, but the sail boats disappeared fast in the 1980s, as the little motors sold for very cheap during the "green" agricultural "revolution" were re-used to propel the boats ; in 1991, I spent one month in that country again and the big sailing boats had almost all gone. The tones of this photo are lovely and I am very happy that you posted this scanned photo !

It looks like an ancient world. How dramatic the world was, Specially the Bangladesh!

An excellent photo within your gallery - showing part of the world few of us will ever get to experience. The scene seems tranquil though I am sure this is not the case. Good lighting and a good scan. Tfs marlene

What a wonderful impression of this traditional boat! Very beautiful light and an excellent perspective. The composition is outstanding. This is really a great capture!

And once again I must say, that some old scanned photos have got just fantastic level of quality. Superb! Very interesting information, you are very brave man.
On the thumbnail this ship reminded me Thor Heyerdahl and his "Ra" boats.
Thanks for this your story.

Hello Gert. Bangladesh in 1972. It seems that you've seen every country in the world. Presumably, you could always combine the personal and professional things. Anyway, the photo is absolutely worth seeing. Unfortunately, Bangladesh has remained a country with diverse problems until today.
Best rgds, Wolfgang.

Hi Gert, Very nice shot that appeared at random on your page. What adventures you had! and what countries you visited. No wonder you prefer something easier and not so much. I couldn't travel as I would like for fifty years of my life, so now I am such IF lady :). Yes, the overloaded boats ARE dangerous.
