Photographer’s Note

Going by boat through the Ganges delta in southern Bangladesh, I had to rent a small cabin since the deck where I wanted to put my sleepingbag was already packed when I arrived. Throughout the evening we stopped at small towns to take on even more passengers, most of them climbing onto the very top of the boat. As I opened a wooden shutter in my cabin in the morning, this is what I saw. All through the night these people had been packed on the roof of the boat, most of them standing because there was no place to lie down.
This picture from 1972 was scanned from a Kodachrome slide.

As always a good note.
It looks like the motor (Suppose it's a diesel,otherwise it hasn't a very long time to live) is not of that kind that helping to reduce the global warming. you audience looking both curios and serious in the same way. The only minor thing to complain about is the poor fellow that you cut half of his face.

Hi Gert,
Your photos from Bangladesh are precious documents ! I enjoyed reading the note, but without any note, we could also imagine other interesting stories... The black smoke from the steam boat add to the atmosphere - I would be happy to know between which cities you were travelling - I guess this is not the famous "Rocket" operating between Dhaka and Khulna !

I find your gallery very interesting, and I think in fact your LIFE is very interesting!! I like the morning light here, they look very cold though. Nice daily life capture. TFS
