This is the busy Buri Ganga River which skirts around the south side of Dhaka. I wanted to capture the hustle and bustle of life on the river, but at the same time create an interesting composition. I tried to do that by taking up a position on the south side of the bridge at Babubazar where I could include in the foreground these local water taxis which had come together in the shape of a flower. The water taxi that is pushing away on the left looked to me like a petal breaking away from the flower. In the background are dozens of the triple deck steel ferries that ply Bangladesh's waterways and not infrequently sink with considerable loss of life. Focal length was 15mm and ISO was 100.

You captured the scene very well, David, with the way you placed the two clusters of boats in the foreground. Nice light, too.
Perhaps this is the bridge that was under construction in this photo of mine.

Very good shot. I agree with the previous comment. Horizon deviates attention a little from the two clusters of small boats. But just a sugestion. Very well captured scene!

Hi David, Very nice image of old and new, big and small. I may disagree with the idea that the horizon should be done away with, as the big ships are right there in the background, which contrasts well with the nice small boats in the foreground and middle ground. I love the scene.

I think this is truly a superb daily life shot, from a very good vantage point. I like the radial patterns of the 2 groups of canoes & their symmetry. Good work!

Great use of the wide angle. Good mixture between paddle boat in the foreground and powered boats in the background.

Very nice 'daily life' shot.
But i think i would crop out the whole upper part and keep only one subject, the two flowers on the river.

"The water taxi that is pushing away on the left looked to me like a petal breaking away from the flower" It's hard not to smile reading your marvelous note and looking at your photo.
You've made my day once again

You have to go to Buriganga or any other busy river in Bangladesh very early in the morning and you'll find the boats literally in a flower ('Shapla' or Water Lily) shaped composition. Anyway, I find the image too cluttered. A crop on the upper part may actually work well.

Hello David, I've just been scooting through the Bangladesh pics and came across this one. It reminds me so much of the scenes of the river that I remember from my travels there. It's incredible how much life revolves around the water. I like this perspective from high on the bridge. It's one that I didn't get but wish I had...
PS I've just read Kazi's comment above. OK it may be true that you could make this a slightly better photo but it wouldn't represent the reality. The photo is busy because it's a busy river. This is Dhaka as it is - thanks for showing it.
