I have just discovered a few more photos from Baku I would like to share.
I'm not happy with this image (again!). That evening I really tried to kill too many birds with one stone. I arrived back from Qobustan (mud volcanos and petroglyphs) on a very late bus and then spent lots of time looking for the Heydar Aliyev Centre, the location of which I only knew very vaguely. Consequently I arrived too late to catch the best of blue hour light and did not even have time to think about the composition. Minutes later the sky turned pitch black.
My guidebook says nothing about all those fascinating modern buildings as it was published in 2008, before many of them were completed (lots of new buildings and structures were put in place for 2012 Eurovision Contest). I saw the Heydar Aliyev Centre on the way from the airport and googled it later but it was not as straight forward to find as I imagined.
In WS another image of this iconic bulding in daylight (yes, I did go there again and again I did not get the shot I wanted!) and a photo of another modern building in Baku.

Even modern shapes of structures are very attractive if you take them in a perfect POV. This is a good example. Well done!

You're disappointed, I am not! I like the way you framed this bridge which curve leads our view on the illuminated building at far right, at the blue hour.
It is sometimes better to ignore the tourists guides to discover some unknown areas, or buy up-to-date books to prepare well your visit!

I understand what you mean about not being satisfied with certain photographs. I think we're both too perfectionist perhaps. But I wouldn't complain if this were mine. The sweep of the overpass is a major feature, and acts as a dominant frame for the futuristic buildings beyond. And the sky is still visible! But I do worry about you wandering alone at night in God-forsaken parts of foreign cities. Take care!

You may not be perfectly happy with this shot but, believe me, there is no need to complain, it is absolutely fine! The wonderful, wide sweep of the overpass is irresistible in transferring viewers from the top left to the bottom right corners, like a fairground ride. You, also, have lovely balance with the arched building in the b/g.
Have a lovely day,

this shot and your commentary struck a chord with me, as I have also spent hours looking for a particular place from an out of date guidebook. Places change so quickly nowadays, so I tend to use Google Earth and a bit of reconnaissance before embarking on a trip. However you did get a shot with an enticing and elegant sweep with beautiful lights and clarity so it was worthwhile. Looks so different at night as clearly demonstrated in the excellent workshop images.

Baku must have changed tremendously since my very brief visit (without a camera) in 2004, or I just didn't see the modern parts. To me the city offered a very attractive blend of 19th and 20th century buildings, and some much older. What you have captured here looks great in a different way, quite bold, and in this case with very elegant lines. You still had time to combine the artificial light with what little was left of natural light, and you exposed it well.

Your article is interesting and exhibited this modern architecture very nicely. Though it was a low light image but you managed your gears perfectly as well as light and color. Nice composition specially deep blue sky background. Good time recording and POV.
best wishes and thanks,

there is a great deal to enjoy in this well conceived and perfectly presented shot, the glorious curves of the bridge dominate the scene whilst the interesting shapes of the buildings in the BG and blue hour sky add a great deal to the image for me.

The strong blue colour (like the fabulous blue of Yves Klein) of the early night is often the perfect background for a successful picture. The combination with the curved lines is very interesting.

Immense perspective and pattern! just loved this sweeping curve leading the eye into the distance turning this a bold and powerful composition. Lovely colours, exposure and contrast to dark night sky. Great lens work, Congrats
