Photographer’s Note

2 photos today. The main one shows Garni Temple, the second (workshop) version shows Garni Gorge located behind the temple. Unfortunately it's not possible to get high enough to include both in one frame. 13mm. focal length, I corrected the perspective distortion.

From Armeniapedia:
It was built in the first century A.D. by the Armenian King Tiridates with the money he received after visiting Emperor Nero in Rome. The temple was destroyed in 1679 in an earthquake, but was reconstructed in Soviet times. (You can recognize the new stones by their lack of carving, which allows you to appreciate the originals.)

This is an excellent presentation of a wonderful Doric temple, Tan, and with a really useful note too. This presentation, with the perspective and shadows, makes it look very dramatic and I like the way you show its position in a rural setting. It is interesting the way that the top of the structure appears to be in shadow and the bottom in sunlight and the shadows on each side of the temple are on different sides of the columns, suggesting that the ligh was directly behind you.
It's rare to see a building of this period in such perfect condition (even if reconstructed). I would love to visit myself. Regards Kevin

Good evening Tan. I think the angle approach here showing the height and immense size of this Temple is emphasized with your wide angle viewpoint. Even though you had to correct the distortion from the upwards angle of the lens it really looks great like this Tan. I would not have known at all. But having said it sure is great to have the options..Filter..distort...lens correction. Great work Tan!

Wow, great shot, with a real eye popping perspective! The close in view is good, and with the correction it looks very impressive, really towering over the viewer. As usual, the colour and contrast really makes this outstanding. Well done!

Good to "get 2 for the price of 1!!!" Her a nice wide angle effect from a fine 'corner'POV. Colors, exposure and sharpness are just fine. Interesting Roman/Greek architectural style, with a good explanatory note

WOW....a very impressive ancient structure. Your POV seems to emphasise its bulk, and makes it look huge...is it? I like the inclusion of the clouds and the distant snow-capped mountains.

It looks a very interesting country. So strange a temple completely alone in this place: no other houses, nothing!

Hi Tan.

I like the way this amazingly well preserved temple is inegrated in the landscape. The picture in workshop is beautiful too and allows us appreciating this very special countryside combining grassy fiels and deeply eroded gorges.

Hi Tan, tough shot, nice PP. It looks like there was a lot of damage in that earthquake, but it looks too like they've done a great job in fixing it up too. The angled approach works well in the composition, that great blue sky makes a great backdrop. I had a look at your workshop as well. Interesting features created by the river flowing through the valley. Nicely captured.

I can't decide whether I'd have preferred it without the obvious perspective correction that you applied, or not. Looking up at such an imposing builing, you'd expect it to appear to be leaning back slightly, and such pronounced perspective distortion can often enhance the impact of an architecural photo. It's when the distortion is sloppy and half-arsed that it needs to be corrected.
You've made an excellent job of it though, and I like the overall image - simple and effective. It would have been interesting to see the uncorrected original version in the WS.

Hi Tan,
The clarity of detail is impressive here and I like also the WS broad perspective. The angled view creates much higher impact than a straight on approach. Given the carnage that has occurred in Armenia, I am surprised the temple is still standing. Well captured.

Splendid picture also after your correction to perspective.
The super wide angle lens are formidable but indeed a little bit to up down, and you get a distortion.
Excellent composition and nice of colours.

Tan, here is a wonderful shot that I have to disagree partially with your composition. The angle is perfect but the problem is the lack of room between the roof and the frame of the picture. It is to tight. I guess that less green in the bottom and more blue on the top would have given the better balance.

The difference is is more appreciable because it's surrouded by nature.

Excellent pictures..both. the low POV for this shot makes the temple tower over the viewer. The picture of the gorge on the other hand provides excellent depth. A pity, as you said, that there are no high points to capture these both together!

Hello Tan,

I like very much such shots from outside corners of building -- they illustrate two-point perspective so dramatically (where the lines from the cornices, floor, steps, etc. can all be extrapolated to meet at two vanishing points on the horizon line. The note is succinct and engaging.

I would never guess the location od ths Roman Temple, and I am stunned to learn that there are some Roman ( Or Roman financed ) ruins that far: It is also the first time I hear about Garni
