From the marketplace in Gyumri, northwestern Armenia. This woman selling various kinds of vegetables looked very busy attending to her customers as I turned my camera towards her. Just as I pressed the button she looked up and noticed me. In case she got angry she was still too busy to show it.
Gyumri, formerly known as Leninakan, is the second largest city of Armenia. It was severely damaged in an earthquake in 1988 but is now largely rebuilt.

The horizontal lines of vegetables give a lovely structure to the shot. A lovely daily life picture at this market with good detail throughout. The display of fresh green vege renders a lovely contrast and a great draw to eyes. Excellently composed off centre, the eye contact I believe offers a stronger impact here and the ladies on the fore ground make an excellent composition. Excellent daily life picture. Congrats, TFS.

Hi Gert, Why should she be angry with you? She just spotted your camera but was to busy to smile. The market looks like in Warsaw. Similar vegetables, sprig onions, radishes. I like this composition with the saturated green on the diagonal. Were you also in Yerevan? There were many popular jokes about Yerevan radio in Communist time.

A vegetable market is always a spectacular place. Well taken scene, enjoy the weekend.
CLODO (35748) 2012-06-29 3:04
Nice market scene well framed as if we were doing our shopping and giving some money to the seller. un green diagonal splits the image in 2: the sellers and the buyers.

This is a marketplace snap, so taken in a hurry. But did u see the bananas are complementing the yellow dress of the lady as well. Nice green leafy veggie and buyer seller interaction. good daily life colourful picture with sharpness.TFS,

This is a very impressive "people" shot with definite strong eye contact here - I just hope she's not about to whip out a revolver from underneath those onions!
But, apart from the lady "giving you the eye", this picture is brimming with activity and the varied fruit and vegetables display a glorious wealth of vibrant colours. The exposure is perfect, the colours strong but true and the sharpness and depth of field are stunning.
A well composed image too considering that this was no doubt taken "on the spur of the moment". Actually, probably no better composed or taken than many of your photographs from 20 or 30 years ago, but modern digital technology has certainly helped you achieve more accurate focus and colours than was then possible.

this is something i still dont feel 100% comfortable doing, but i'm getting better :)
good for you to put yourself out there and just get your shot.
You see veggies, i see Candy in the Bg! :)
good street scene and also a great cultural scene.

My immediate impression here are all the colours! I see green, red blue , yellow and so on. This is a very fine "street view daily life" picture and the eye contact with this woman adds a lot to this capture. I think she is flirting with you!

good shot, fine portraits and reportage in one. Glance of woman seller is a bit "dangerous". Nice scene and theme about the daily life.
Have a nice WE.
scroller (3445) 2012-06-30 14:20
Strong and vivid colours. A great contribution to the daily life and food theme. The question is, the woman in yellow is her finger in or beside the nose? ;)
Ha en skön sommar!

I like this candid shot. I am struck by the brightness of the colours . Also, the abundance of vegetables. here we shop in supermarkets where a tiny bunch of spring onions are priced quite highly so that I buy them only occasionally. Not because I can't afford them but that object to being ripped off.Why is it that in the UK we have such things almost rationed and yet in places much less well off than us they have the sense to make such lovely fresh veg readily available , I assume at a reasonable cost?
CanmoreKevin (2111) 2012-07-03 8:23
I really like that quick unintended expression. It really makes the photo.

hopefully, I am back to my usual TE activity at least for a while :)
so, you've visited Southern ex-Soviet 'republics' which are now independent states!
I wonder how you felt there and how you managed with speaking to the local people? did they speak English?..
I see you've posted quite a lot of interesting photos while I was inactive, but I'll begin with the latest one which is truly in your style - eye-contact, a photo telling a little story... :)
I'm not sure the lady seller would have objected to your taking photos of her - I guess she was just surprised at who would want to take a photo of something that, to her, was so ordinary and "daily" :)
I hope you are fine!
kato (11630) 2012-07-05 3:36
You're capturing well this daily life shot by excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the negotiation scene of a seller and a buyer. It seems to so fresh for various kind of vegetables.
Have a nice day.
serp2000 (45856) 2012-07-06 11:04
Good snapshot, indeed. Oh, I like these vegetables on the summer table too. Good eye-catching composition, vivid colours and perfect sharpness.
Few days ago I have read about Ixus 1000. I like the Canon products, but the expert said this is not the best model of cheap Canon + weak battery. What can you say about this "soap box".

Angshu (56760) 2012-07-16 22:08
A nice daily life shot, this time from the street market. The array of vegetables on display seem to be fresh. The involuntary interaction actually adds to the picture in terms of impact rather than being a bystanders POV picture...here it becomes more engaging.
maloutim (9655) 2012-08-03 8:11
Lovely vegetable markets in these oriental countries.
Colourful, daily life shot.
I hope her severe look is only one of surprise, not of anger :-)
Thanks for sharing.

namaste Gert, a nice presentation here, which I got from your archive. Like the bazar scene a lot. The ladies are looking well in front of those green vegetables. Excellent image quality. Sharpness and depth are awesome in this very well composed photo. Tfs.

I opened TE homepage today (using a break between power cuts and between hotels with weak-to-no wifi and found several of your images featured.
I especially like this one (in spite of the eye contact) maybe because I haven't eaten fresh lettuce, spring onions and radishes for over a week and really miss them! Contrary to the greens, I've had more than my usual allowance of bananas! :)
Greetings from Patan, which marks the start of my journey in the Kathmandu Valley, after a stay in Pokhara Valley and Chitwan region.

A amazing market scene well framed, good eye contact with the saleswoman. Well seen and captured.
