Photographer's Note

This is the Surp Stepanos church, built between 988 and 1029 AD and part of the former Marmashen monastery, about 10 km from the city of Gyumri in north-western Armenia.

Two smaller churches and a number of ruins also remain from the old monastery, which is situated near the closed border with Turkey.

I visited Marmashen on a Sunday, when lots of school kids had come here to learn about the history of their country. Being children, most of them were more interested in playing football or other games.

There are two more pictures from Marmashen in workshops.
