Photographer's Note

20 years ago - last weekend commemorating this tragedy

A terrible earthquake hit northwestern Armenia in full winter 1988, on the 7th of december at 11h41.

A typical grave monument in Gyumri (formerly Leninakan), the biggest city in ruins after the Spitak earthquake. About 25000 died; many more got injured and survived in great distress. This happened to a background of the collapse of the Sovjet Union. Even 15 years after the effects were still very visible everywhere in town.

Many of the graves picture the defunct with some elements of his life and in this case the events.
