This is the Cascade, a very long staircase in Yerevan, capital of Armenia.
It was originally built in the early 1970's to commemorate 50 years of Soviet Armenia. However, it was left half finished, ironically symbolizing decades of Soviet neglect, until 2001 when a private philanthropist invested a considerable amount of money in repairing and beautifying the monument.
Now the Cascade is sometimes the stage for outdoor concerts, there is an art gallery inside and it is supposed to be a popular gathering place in the evenings.

The single soul in stunning Red combined by other basic GB make the shot works photographically, simple, effective and well selected. Lovely layout a fine composition with the upwards pov leading constantly to the two structures as the RGB unites it as a whole. Good timely shot uncluttered, clean and fresh on cheery day. Well done, TFS
Useful notes as always.. Cheers!

the best thing and most notable thing about this scene is how it gains height inside the frame.
and thats even despite the face the man is walking down!
its also great to see photos from Armenia.
thanks for this one.

I like the way you composed your image, dividing it in two parts : the concrete staircase and the cascade of greenery. The upward view gives the staircase a sense of height and depth while the human presence adds some life to the composition.
Thanks for sharing.

Interesting and ironical monument. Even more impressive steps than these in Odessa. Superb composition with the steps white and green. So many lines here - horizontal and diagonal. Gunnar appears very rarely now (why?) so the man in red shirt is following you now.
Have a beautiful Sunday Malgo

very interesting place and great geometry of the composition. I like the diagonals and so many lines and shapes here. The man in the red shirt adds some life and serves well as a scale marker

Another one of your "single person going about his business!" type of photo! The monument looks fine to me but I do not get the hedge bit! A very interesting note too. Communists loved glorifying their "acheivements" but I wish I could not say the same for the capitalists! The only difference seem to be the amount of money spent and the process in chosing a designer!
Thanks for sharing

Great mix of concrete and greenery giving a great deal of contrast and texture. I like the lonely feel of the lone person. Much depth and well composed.

Impressive place, the grandomany was a common choice in the communism era. Well taken scene, have a nice week.

Yes, the man in red T-shirt has an ability to improve any photo. He becomes the eye-catcher whenever he shows up. Here, the green zig-zag pattern of the hedges would be good enough by itself, but the man in red makes it perfect.

Hi dear Gert
What a great shot via perfect cropped vertical framework and the best composition. So wonderful and artstic image indeed. I like three isolated parts devided in good balance. A man in pink is very good accent for this work. Thanks for your good work and have a good day!

A very interesting note about this place which, to be honest, is not the most beautiful monument I have ever seen. But you have captured it superbly in all its stark grey concrete glory and have enhanced it perfectly with the inclusion of a figure in red perfectly placed both in the frame and on this long staircase too.
As well as the crimson-shirted man, the zig-zag lines of the walls and hedges are well arranged and lead the eye upward toward the tall pillars on high. Perfect exposure, good vibrant colours and excellent sharpness.

Hello Gert. The monuments of all kinds from the days of the Soviet Union clearly demonstrate his own greatness and power over other nations. Many of these monuments have survived to the end of this era. Others have been neglected and are now experiencing a renaissance. Your photo is a good example. Best regards, Wolfgang.

Ganska intressant bild.

well well, this view makes me wonder... and recall the "USSR times". Yes, such monuments were everywhere!
Interesting vertical composition. That man walking down the stairs helps to see the real size of the staircase and brings a bit of life without which the place would look kind of gloomy even despite the sunny day :)
ourania (44398) 2012-07-18 12:55
a very well considered presentation of this extraordinary, huge and strange structure which seems to have lost its way through symbolism and looks equivocal, inviting people to invent new uses of it, which they have done as we understand from your notes. I like the narrow vertical frame and the depth and perspective that draw us all the way up to monuments. Lighting is great and the man climbing down the stairs adds much appreciated movement, scale, colour and human reference. Well done and thank you!
All the best, have a good night,

A region far beyond my travel horizon.
The frame of your choice support this compo well.
How much did the man in the red shirt ask for joining it?
danyy (0) 2012-07-26 4:15
contre plongée bien pensée avec ces marches qui guident le regard vers le haut du monument. Le ciel est d'un bleu impressionnant.
Angshu (56750) 2012-07-26 4:52
Interesting choice of vertical which makes me yearn to see more on the right & the left. But I guess, you wanted to show me the sense of gaining height which you've well accomlished along with the man providing scale.
jmdias (63504) 2012-10-12 10:06
very interesting monument mixed with stairs. I liked the way you framed the image and the complex of lines we can see here. TFS. a curious and beautiful image from a country whose images are rare.

You're capturing well this architecture by a good angle and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see long staircase and tall monuments in capital. It's also a good view for lush green at right side. It seems to the great art work. And, a man going down stair draws out a good impact.
