This is the Surp Stepanos church, built between 988 and 1029 AD and part of the former Marmashen monastery, about 10 km from the city of Gyumri in north-western Armenia.
Two smaller churches and a number of ruins also remain from the old monastery, which is situated near the closed border with Turkey.
I visited Marmashen on a Sunday, when lots of school kids had come here to learn about the history of their country. Being children, most of them were more interested in playing football or other games.
There are two more pictures from Marmashen in workshops.

This is a beautiful and unique strucutre, and a fascinating type of architecture. The red hue of the stone compliments the blue sky beautifully. Thank you for your informative note too.

the point of view, vertical framing, time of capture and lighting make a fine presentation of this imposing old church, with lovely bold colour and dramatic contrasts. The scene with the children playing adds vividness and contrasts very well the rigidness of the building and the peacefulness of the landscape. It's a very interesting composition of themes. Lighting and colours are beautiful. I also like very much the sense of depth and the shadow on the foreground. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great week,

I looked with a lot attention toward your both workshop pictures.
Almost not to believe with these old bus children make a trip.
We see the green grass on the roof of the church, not to believe.
Never seen in my life but excellent creation.
Nice captured, and excellent composed.
Very well done, TFS.
Have a nice week,

J'ai bien l'impression que tant qu'il y aura un ballon, il y aura des enfants autour et que des équipes se feront, même si le cours d'histoire est passionnant.

A fine picture in your typical style; some old and interesting building combined with a view of present life in the form of people. The complementary pictures are equally interesting. All pictures are well composed.

A very interesting construction. It always suprises me that although all churches kind of look similar they a also look different! I like the mixture of arches and sharp angled shapes on this one. Armenia is one of those countries which I feel I want to know more about so I am looking forward to more of your photos and stories.
Thanks for sharing

I love this building and the photo of it. The grass on the roof and the kids playing ball say a lot about the building. Nice capture.

Hi gert, So you went also to Armenia. You had an interesting trip, not much visited places here on TE. beautiful very old church, with the interesting tower. Nice view of the kidds playing rather than learning. i always looks with pleasure at the school excursion when the kids learn the history and art.
polpo56 (15134) 2012-06-26 0:28
in this beautiful picture you can breathe the taste of the history and traditions.
Very nice contrast between the old church and the children playing football.
Have a nice day.

Hello Gert. Just as Georgia - Armenia now. These Eastern European countries are really interesting. You should visit this country, before mass tourism began. Even today's photo is again very beautiful and full of peaceful atmosphere. My compliments for this successful shot. Rgds wolfgang.

A trip to Armenia, interesting. Of course a wonderful composition and POV I like the contrast of the old crumbling down church and the bright young kids.
abmdsudi (36344) 2012-06-26 8:55
This is an Armenian church alright with its unique design, well placed in the comp and a colorfully rich, expressive composition and the elements work really well together. Love the strength and clarity that you have achieved in vivid detail shot of this magnficient old church as it stands out strongly against the blue sky showing good depth and perspective. Boys are boys no matter where they are but they bring this to life. A fine shot with impeccable quality. A powerful shot, Nice work

Good morning, Gert,
It was really interesting trip. Unfortunatelly I never been in Armenia and Georgia. Very old culture, a rich heritage. An interesting capture of the street scene.
bayno (18340) 2012-06-26 22:49
beautiful church, its architecture is very special, I had never seen anything like it, may be a Romanesque style, too bad for the monastery that is seen in WS, now almost destroyed, great light and beautiful colors, the children playing enrich the composition excellent, quality...
have good day...

beautiful architecture so unique for this region. Sad a bit that it is not properly restored.
Great capture with children in the foreground adding a lot of life here.

Hello Hello Gert,
I appreciate the interest of the image of Armenia. The architecture of the church is very interesting, especially the roof of the tower. The light, colors and sharpness are excellent. Bravo.
Have a nice day

An interesting note and a trio of interesting photographs from an area of the World we don't see too often on TE.
But, when you're young, history can be boring - certainly more boring than football - as you have shown here. Lovely lighting on this old church and its well worn stonework and the light has revealed all the beauty of the textures of it. Beautiful natural colours, perfect exposure and excellent sharpness.

hello gert, interesting ancient architecture. Don't think I have seen anything quite like it. A well exposed shot and I like that you have included the school children. I also liked the photo of the school bus. Another ancient relic!
Angshu (53982) 2012-07-06 2:59
The typical structure of such churches found in this area creates a good backdrop of the children busy with their playing activities. Nice post of daily life with a touch of history. I also see with pleasant surprise that this is one of your new digital images
asajernigan (19669) 2012-07-06 11:46
This is a nicely composed shot of this old church. The kids in the foreground add life and scale for the shot. The contrast created by the great blue sky and red building is striking.
batalay (34109) 2012-07-06 21:56
A superb shot of the beautifully preserved millennium-old church. The architecture is unmistakably Armenian, especially the cupola crowning the building. What makes it especially interesting is the group of kids kicking around a soccer ball on the grounds of the church.
kato (11106) 2012-09-04 20:38
You're capturing well this church by a good angle and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see medieval church with unique design. The knot of a building is smooth and it is brewing a sense of togetherness which chiseled and built one huge rock.
Have a nice week.
Fis2 (79806) 2012-10-22 9:35
A very curious church.
Good frame and colors.
I love old churches.

Very interesting shot, Gert. It was the group of people who were standing in front of an old church, but it seemed that they had nothing to do with the church attracted my eye, When I saw it on thumbnail. Ah..h, I've found it out now.. great story telling image. Wonderful journalism...Beautiful light control and colour, nice detail..
