I am already in Yerevan and today I have visited Khor Virap.
The Khor Virap (Armenian: Խոր Վիրապ, meaning deep pit or "deep well") is an Armenian Apostolic Church monastery located in the Ararat valley in Armenia, near the border with Turkey, about 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) south of Artashat, Ararat Province. The monastery was host to a theological seminary and was the residence of Armenian Catholicos.
Khor Virap's notability as a monastery and pilgrimage site is attributed to the fact that Grigor Lusavorich, who later became Saint Gregory the Illuminator, was initially imprisoned here for 13 years by King Tiridates III of Armenia. Saint Gregory subsequently became the king's religious mentor, and they led the proselytizing activity in the country. In the year 301, Armenia was the first country in the world to be declared a Christian nation. A chapel was initially built in 642 AD at the site of Kirat Virap by Nerses III the Builder as a mark of veneration to Saint Gregory. Over the centuries, it was repeatedly rebuilt. In 1662, the larger chapel known as the "St. Astvatsatsin" (Holy Mother of God) was built around the ruins of the old chapel, the monastery, the refectory and the cells of the monks. Now, regular Church services are held in this church. It is probably the most visited pilgrimage site in Armenia.

Wydaje siê ¿e polskie Tatry to przy nich zaledwie pagórki. Piêkna i stonowana kolorystyka dodaje smaku tej ciekawej kompozycji.
Gratulujê i pozdrawiam-

this is a very well realised photograph with excellent composition and colour contrast. The beautiful pov gives me a feeling of being actually at the beautiful location at the foot of the snow clad mountain. I liked the mood of serenity and peace that the picture conveys.
Thanks for sharing and have a great evening.

you are presenting a very fascinating image today! Very well working POV, an excellent perspective and really very impressive. I like our approach on this famous place a lot. My compliments!

I had a view of Ararat from my hotel room in Yerevan, but it was mainly lost in the haze most of the time. It wouldn't have been as fine as this in any case, and no pretty monastery in the foreground. You were lucky to have such fine weather and to get these great colours.
PS There is more Turkey than Armenia in this picture :-)
PaulVDV (22753) 2014-04-02 11:40
Probably the most visited pilgrimage site in Armenia ... and I didn't visit it ... ! Shame on me.
But time is such a determining factor.
It looks like you had wonderful weather which resulted in a splendid colour contrast between the redbrown tower, the snowy mountain and the blue sky.
The snowcap is enormous in April. For views of the Ararat your choice of travel season is much better than mine.
I think you took this picture early in the morning. Am I right ? You've clearly benefited from the best natural light.
I also like your composition with the church all the way down in the corner and the biggest part of the picture reserved for the Ararat.
Best regards, Paul

Complimenti! Una foto stupenda e fortemente suggestiva.
Ciao, buona notte e ebuon proseguimento di viaggio.

irresistible composition this. A real man versus the might of nature image. The mountain looks so majestic and the monastery so small in comparison but that is what makes this glorious image so captivating. Love it!
Regards - B.

A very beautiful view! A fine combination of the foreground castle with the impressive mountain far away.
Must have been a very interesting experience.

Is it the Turkish boarder? I remember this is just a symbol of Armenian nation. Impressive view to the famous Ararat. Fine DoF, and excellent composition with the church on the FG.
Best wishes from LA!
patpatch (1601) 2014-04-03 9:36
That picture is very impressive. And I like your superb composition very much.
Because I like the opposition, the strong contrast between the strength of the mountain in the background, and the appearance of fragility of the monastery.Between the large place of the mountain and the monastery just at the bottom of the picture.
It's a very strong effect.

Piekna fotografia zacheca naprawde do wizyty w Armenii.

As I mentioned to Paul, this is always very intriguing to see pictures from countries that don't often appear on the pages of TE. What a superb composition and imposing view of the snow covered mountain, this must have been quite a sight to look upon first hand! Plain and simple, and that's all it needs to be to express the pure beauty of nature and man. Happy to know you're having a good time. Go and enjoy the many wonders of these "unknown" countries. Travel safe. Be well.
ACL1978 (7491) 2014-04-04 5:45
A beautiful shot, Malgo, well worth the praise! Your framing is perfect, with the monastery dwarfed by the distant mountain, and the light is exquisite - a really lovely image, thanks!
worldcitizen (7083) 2014-04-04 14:52
There have been some beautiful photos from Armenia lately. This one is definitely a stunning view. I like that the mountain has the main place in the frame; it shows us just how large and majestic it is in front of the church. Great architecture and nature together in this photo.
Gigidusud (16299) 2014-04-04 15:04
Fantastic capture of the mount Ararat. The monastery on the right looks tiny next to the giant. Well done!
Happy holidays dear Malgo!
daddo (24420) 2014-04-05 15:27
Zdravo Malgo. I hope you post a shot of the interior of one of the churches as I am interested to see the artistic influences/style. Fantastic POV that shows the special sites that are often chosen for religious buildings. it is not hard to raise one's eyes to heaven in such a place. Great light. Pozdrav. Klaudio.
rigoletto (34269) 2014-04-06 11:55
yeah, there is more turkey in here than armenia, but that's petty politics. what i rather see here is a combination of majestic earth and a bit of human history.
macjake (57074) 2014-04-07 23:42
great looking shot!
i'm actually more impressed and enjoying the 'little'
tower on the right!
what an impact it has on the entire scene, its completely dwarfed by the mountain.
without that tower and stone wall, so much is lost.
Didi (57264) 2014-04-08 0:07
Magnificient view indeed with a very good frame quality
Interesting diagonal between the belltower and the mount top
I have done a WS
ikeharel (58275) 2014-04-08 7:34
The first mountain that named on the bible, is beautifully "rises" as a backdrop in white, Malgo.
Good sense of depth was added with the church, tower, its compound with the surrounding walls.
Fine view, well collected.
romanaa (7966) 2014-04-14 14:11
wow, this is what I call A composition... Brilliant, simple and effective, underlining the size of the famous mountain, accenting the contrast of artificial and natural beauty.
One of the best shots of yours.
RhodieIke (11742) 2014-04-16 0:13
Wow isn't the world a beautiful place, as shown here in this post of this fantastic snow covered mountain and lovely Monastery.
Breath taking scenery, well done, top marks.

Witaj, widok na piekna górę w b.dobrym kadrze. Widzę, że ostatnia podróż udana.
mcmtanyel (14137) 2014-04-19 13:00
What a majestic mountain and a beautiful photo that captures it with passion. The earth tones of the monastery against the white peak of Ararat make a very pleasant contrast. Knowing the history of these lands, I would say the monastery is watching over the mountain with sadness and longing.
Miguel82 (24319) 2014-08-14 8:40
That pilgrimage site appears so small compared with the huge snowy mountain in the bg, sharp picture, good record displaying Caucasus range, regards
