Photographer’s Note

One of the many challenges the new American president will face is to get the troops out of Afghanistan and Iraq.
As of October 18, 2008, there have been 929 coalition deaths in Afghanistan as part of ongoing coalition operations (Operation Enduring Freedom and International Security Assistance Force (ISAF)): 546 American, 121 British, 96 Canadian, 30 German, 23 Spanish, 24 French, 17 Dutch, 18 Danish, 13 Italian, 8 Polish, 8 Romanian, 6 Australian, 3 Czech, 3 Estonian, 3 Norwegian, 2 Hungarian, 2 Portuguese, 2 Swedish, 1 Finnish, 1 Latvian, 1 Lithuanian, 1 South Korean.

Un des nombreux défis auxquels le nouveau président américain devra faire face est de sortir les troupes d'Afghanistan et d'Irak. Le 18 octobre 2008 on dénombrait déjà 929 morts dans la coalition et bien plus de blessés encore.

Hello Marc,
very good shot of the troops in Afghanistan and an up to date note about american history, present and future. I like the B&W version and the impressiv clouds in the sky. Thanks for this thought-provoking picture and I hope that at least some things will change now.

Life is too precious and the world is too beautiful to be destroyed by greedy warmongers.

Salut Marc,

Chouette, une nouvelle photo d Afghanistan dont j apprecie beaucoup le cadrage et la composition. Pour une fois, je n ai pas de preference entre la couleur et le N&B. J ai juste fait sur la version N&B un WS pour positionner differement le contraste.
Bien d accord avec toi, les dossiers Afghans et Iraquiens vont etre un gros morceau a gerer pour essayer d y trouver une conclusion acceptable pour les populations. J ai peur que ce ne soit tres difficile maintenant.

Hallo Marc,
Het is diep en diep triest om te lezen hoeveel mensen daar al zijn gesneuveld (meer dan wat ik had verwacht en wist)...en om wat vraag ik me af. Daar is een strijd gaande die niet valt te winnen, dat hadden de Amerikanen toch moeten leren van de Russen. Nu zitten ze er midden in en Obama wil nog meer mensen sturen....triest :-(
Je foto is iets wat we hier amper zien, hoog journalistiek werk, kan zo iedere krant in...klasse.

Hey Marc,
It's an excellent documentary despite the lack of action in it to go along with the note. I mean the poignancy comes more from the note than the photo. Another country screwed by you know who... Any figures on the number of Afghan casualties? Best wishes,

These guys in there have no chance to win with the Taliban, unless...
Unless they declare that there really is a war on Taliban in Afghanistan !!!

But as an exercise for for the arm forces of several countries - it's great !
It's better than those fake 'war games', organized by some debilic generals here and there...
This one is a much more fun...

Cet olympus "antique" fonctionnait à merveille, tes photos de cette époque sont si belles ! Cette photo me fait penser à la séquence d'un film, je m'y croirais...
929 morts du côté de la coalition, mais combien du côté Afghan ? Je pense que personne ne le sait avec exactitude, probablement beaucoup plus !
Ce ne sera pas si facile d'en sortir à mon avis...

Salut Marc,

Un décompte horrible et comme d'autres l'ont déjà écrit, sans compter les Afghans.
Une image reportage de circonstance et de qualité, riche en éléments diversifiés. Personnellement je préfère la version B&W à la version couleurs, le B&W marque mieux les excellents contrastes de ta photo.

Une scène de transport d'un de ces soldats morts ? Pas très clair dans la photo ni dans ton commentaire.
Néanmoins une belle image avec beaucoup de sérieux (évoquant tel évènement...)

Il y en a beaucoup qui ont des doutes sur ce genre d'opérations - dont tu faisais partie... - en plus, visiblement cherché par notre ministre de défence belge actuel.. ?

Marc,
Again, a scene that most of us only see in movie and you are there to witness it and captured it. I like the black and white giving it that historic essence though this is a very current issue we are facing with. The fact is I don't think any president, including Obama, will ever pull the troop out of these country, while I don't believe in war but if the U.S. is not there. They may just be run by their own dictatorship or some extreme group of people who doesn't really care about their own people but the power and greed and hatred toward the western countries. Maybe it's the right thing to do. Is to let them be, instead trying to interfere, and we are not really welcome there it seems. I still don't think the U.S. will just sit aside and let that be. There are good and bad that they are there, depending on how you look at it.

Good choice for B & W rendition for this shot.

I have to say that the shoe may be ordinary but the note is very important.

I also have to say that I find it sad that the voice of the local casualties alwats seems to be muffled by the hue and cry of the invaders' deaths.

actually - despite the fact that not much is going on in this image and as such it has a limited "attractiveness" to me - i do like it as it shows the state of "activity" that i wish those soldiers have to have, there... no real military action, no blood, no fire, no...

Ta composition est tellement bien montée que ça donne l'impression que tu es à Hollywood, plutôt qu'à Kabul.

De toutes de tes dernières postées c'est celle ci que je préfère, - belle photo reportage, le N&B lui convient bien -la proposition d'Yves n'est pas mal du tout, je trouve qu'il a ainsi fait disparaître les gris... -
