My last picture from Afghanistan in 1973, and my last picture of any kind for a while. I am going on a journey in a couple of days and will be back in a few weeks.
This is from the city of Kunduz in northern Afghanistan on a market day. The city - not very large in those days - was packed with people (including occasional women wearing burqas) busy selling, buying, haggling, eating, drinking tea, chatting and just having a good time. I was overwhelmed by the photo opportunities. In a workshop you will see one of those few women making her purchases in the textile street.
In recent years Kunduz hit the headlines of world media when in 2001 hundreds of Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters who had gathered here at the fall of the Taliban regime surrendered to the troops of the Northern Alliance, after which most of them were slaughtered.
Both pictures were scanned from Kodachrome slides.

Thanks a lot for posting your good, old pictures from a country which deserves a better future....and a good and safe journey, where ever you go!
It`s a good streetshot!
Nice to see so many people, only men, in so many different poses and action.

looking at these photos (+WS) I would say they were taken with a modern digital camera. Excellent scanning job!
I like both photos... and if you had more to show, I wold gladly see them all :) Like I said before, it's like traveling through the time back into History and the Past.
I very much like the "panorama of people" in this street the continuation of which simply can't be seen behind the crowds of people!
I wish you a nice time wherever you travel :)
oh... and no volcano ash in the sky ;)
I hope to see new photos after you return!

another fine and facinating documentary shot.Like many of your photos this is one to spend time perusing. The Afghan people are a fine featured people, are they not?
Enjoy your trip wherever you are going, but hurry back with some more photos for us all to enjoy.I will miss you while you are away.

Another slide with all colours retained,in perfect condition and expertly scanned. The detail is all there and the scene full of interest.
Enjoy your journey - to somewhere 'exotic' no doubt!

Hi Gert. Men with beards and turbans. Another photo of street scene. The people (men) with their traditional clothing to show a country that seems to stand still. Well done. Excellent technical quality. Regards, Wolfgang.

It's really great that you've shared these nostalgic shots with us here. Even the colours here have this nostalgic feel to them. Your old pictures seem to show a better world, compared to the state of the country today. They have a kind of purity in them.
I wish you happy trails on your upcoming trip & look forward to more of your pictures afterwards. Enjoy.

These old pictures must be quite unique, and should really be worth a wider recognition. I hope this forthcoming exhibition will successful.

You are right Kunduz has become a household name! I do not know whether is good or bad but considering how many people have been killed there it cannot be good.
Thanks for sharing your wonderful photos from Afaganistan with us. It has certainly given me insights which I probably would have never had.
Have a great time wherever you are going.

Hi my dear Gert
Sorry for may late reply, as I am so busy weekday.
Whenever I see your documentry stock, I cannnot think these are from 30 years ago, as they are so still vivid. Great compostion / well considered framework, fine color and deep sharp description as usual. Congratulation on your fine job!
Thanks for your sharing and have a good weekend!

I just love your old series, Gert, so old and rare here! A very common daily scene but very well captured and so full of details. I love to watch them, I've never been to Aghanistan, but I suppose it hasn't changed that much since then! Perfect!

I really enjoy the old post card feeling of this stree life scene. You have found a really appropriate title You do have a feeling that many of the men are involved in discussions. Excellent colours, sharpness and lighting. TFS and have a nice week!

What an attractive and nostalgic document from 37 years ago! The excellent composition is full of life and the colours are very pleasant. Good clarity and sharpness. I like the way you have captured the daily life mood, which includes both the lazy and busy side of life at that time in Afghanistan. One would easily first think that it was taken with a digital camera. A superb scan. A wonderful TE contribution. Thanks for sharing!

For moment, you finish here your serial from Afghanistan, Gert. Your serial is worth seeing and your sensibility for life scene is evident. This country is one of my dreams, and the dream of my Fuji. Many thanks for sharing your old richness, friend.
Waylim (25484) 2010-06-16 23:33
Yet another beautiful scan, I can only imagine what your house is like a room dedicated to all the film and old photograph. I can be in there for days looking at photograph. I enjoy this type of street scene and photography, it's real life as it happened, capture in time and preserved it for a long long time and the longer the better, like fine wine.
stevesaba (8163) 2010-06-19 3:24
A fascinating historical photo, in a country that is in the news daily now! Congratulations! Fine work, cheers,

Hello Gert, I have been looking at my old pics, the quality is so poor, I envy the excellent results you achieve from your reproductions, the originals must also be in a very good condition. This one (as the WS one) is beautiful not only in content, lovely, busy street scene, but also in quality. Well done, very interesting, I sometimes wonder how their lives then compares with today. Thanks
PS Bon Voyage.
happypoppeye (4819) 2010-12-31 8:17
Unfortuneately there isn't alot of "mingling" like this anymore. Well, there is , but you know what I mean. The more minglers, the more dangerous. I'm afraid you probably wouldn't like the country as much anymore, although the people are probably even nicer now.
Great shot. A little moment and window to the past...
Miguel82 (27277) 2013-06-21 1:46
A value document Gert, you're very lucky to went in Afghanistan at this time, so authentic picture

Hello dear Gert,
welcome back! I hope you had a great time in your journeys in Poland and that you have collected several scenes from life in the public places:) The two pictures I came across in your gallery tonight are so exotic and interesting, clear and mysterious at the same time. Daily life is flowing in front of your lens and, even though your captures are quick, I think they give us strong and essential impressions. The colours are vivid and have a special, timeless quality. I like to watch the people and try to decipher their attitudes. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,
