Photographer's Note
It's early morning in Herat city in western Afghanistan. The baker has just opened his shop and is waiting for customers. The freshly made nan, still warm, smells great.
This is scanned from a Kodachrome slide, and the picture was taken in May 1973.

Hello Gert and happy new year.
I find your Afghanistan pictures very interesting.
I like this, with the human figures in strong contrast with the black of his shop.

Hej Gert,
Quite a different composition with such a big black area dominating the picture. But it creates an interesting contrast to the man and his bread.

G: I haven't had time to go over alot of the TE stuff lately, but I like what I see here with your half-lit model. Fine environmental portrait. Perhaps I would've cropped one side tighter - just personal taste. Fine image. regards, c

Hej Gert!
The sunlight caused very strong contrasts and you lost some details of the man's robe. However, the scene looks real and you composed accurately. The man seems to be trying to hide from heat and to watch over his little shop an the sae time ;-)
Best regards

Hi Gert!
I've returned, as promised.I really like this one. Very old but very good. I like the composition, the nans are simply great. I like the texture of the walls and doors and also the pose of the man trying to stay in the shadow. Good work with scanner. Colours are great and it's very sharp also. Very good daily scene!

i love the high contrast, like the effect of the baker stepping out of nowhere - besides the illustration of daily life is more important than all the technicalities - please post more afganistan pics like this with showing people and their life. I wonder - did people mind you photographing them?

Gert I envy you, for being to the place where I would much desire to visit one day. I must say, this is a precious shot. Living in Suburban Melbourne and being able to enjoy the Afghani Naan Bread, Its a unique expereince for me to witness the origin of the bread that I cherish greatly.

Hello Gert,
An excellent shot of light and shade, especially on the clothes of the baker. Color is very well reproduced despite the old slide. I like this strong contrast by reversal film that omits the detail of the dark part, also tasteful brown tone.
Have a nice day, Hisashi
