An early morning in Herat, western Afghanistan, in May 1973. Business is still slow, a few men are discussing the price of what to me looks like rhubarbs, in the background a woman dressed in a burqa seems to be off-loading her donkey, and even further back a man is washing his feet before going to the local mosque for his morning prayers.
This photo from 37 years ago was scanned from a Kodachrome slide.

not even my blurred vision can miss the exceptional quality of this slide :)
yes, they look like rhubarbs to me too - although rhubarb is usually red..?
anyway - beautiful diagonal composition, with terrific colours and a warm early morning oblique light.
it's so nice to watch, with all the turbans and the produce on the ground, that it almost looks staged :)
have a good Sunday,

Hi Gert, my vertical neighbor today,
Your drawer has no end, an I happy about that. another gem from your archive. amazing scene, stunning quality. Fantastic composition with the diagonal line of products and the men chatting or discussion the prizes. I envy you so much you could travel in that time and have such memories.

this is another photo from quite a different world!..
a picturesque world full of sunny rich colours... but a mysterious one, with the philosophy which I will never understand.
Another interesting documentary and historic (now) photo which shows us a bit of the Past and of "that other" world :)
I wonder why nobody is looking at you? You were far away and had a long zoom lens?

You have indeed acquired a new skill with scanning and postprocessing of these old documental pictures. Another very interesting picture with a good diagonal of men and also perfect and pleasant colours!

Very nicely presented the typical bazaar. Many buyers and sellers and a large selection of goods. Pretty well saturated colors. Very nice work

what a wonderful collection you have from your time in Afghanistan. here is a greatexamle of a daily life shot. Teeming with life and detail. There's a lovely light and good colour as well as a strong diagonal composition.
I think you should publish this collection as a book. I would certainly love a copy.

The naan's look great and appetizing. Where I live in Australia we have quite a large Afghan community so I can still treat myself to Naan and Kebab. Did you try these when you were there?
My wife has looked at your recent pictures of Afghanistan an her only comment was "they look happy"

Hello Gert, I have no idea what these gentlemen are selling but I will take your word that it is rhubarb. This is a sight that I can identify with now, after my recent trip to Malaysia, there are so many things going on as you described but what really stands for me here are all the white turbans, there must be at least a dozen. Another interesting scene, well captured & reproduced. Thanks

Looking over your photos I come to the conclusion that for the last 37 years time stood still in Afghanistan. Brilliant collection, thanks for posting.

My little back to decorate this wonderful street scene. One of your best slide Gert. One of the most pleasant thematic picture in TE. As say, you was born like photographer, dear friend. Many thanks for this sharing. Friendly,

Another beautiful scan image, colors are still vivid and contast is good, just a little loss of detials in the bright and dark area. a market place, normally full of people of any ages and gender, here it is only men, a rather strange scene for me, but I understand that it is their culture, as I said, we travel to see place and people not to judge, but things are changing as we progress, and maybe even today, it is already different. A very rare photo you shared with us. Thanks.

Wonderful Photo Gert
It totally captures the mood of the place.
The light, saturation etc - the joys of shooting slide.
I only been into Photography seriously for about 5 years and miss the days of Kodachrome and the likes......I still shoot film on my Nikon FM3a but it is so expensive to develop.
Many thanks for sharing

You're capturing well this food bazaar in street by a good angle and rich color tone, so it's intersting and impressive to see the spectacle of an exchange of the buyer and seller on the ground. The traditional turban which men are winding around the head is also impressive.

Out of curiosity, I wrote in Google "Gert Holmertz" and I received a lot of links to your journalistic successes. What can I add? I am proud that I happened to be friends with you. Another interesting daily life shot of Afghan town.
