This is one of two ancient domes at the town of Chist. There is some debate as to their function. Some say they may have been mausoleums, while others think they were part of a larger complex comprising a mosque and medrassas (Islamic schools). The decoration is Ghorid and is similar to that adorning the Minaret of Jam (see earlier posts). Graves scatter the ground around the base of the domes.

I love everything about this shot ... the colours, the composition, the dome in the foreground standing proud in front of the rugged landscape.

Hi Jonathan, A good piece to remind the ancient glorious days and to raise the arguments. Good shot with impressive contrast. The sunlight and shadow provides a good dimensional view to this picture. Nice PoV and DoF. Well done.

Still so interesting !
Nice picture with a beautifull light.

The light is excellent here. From my experience these type of rocks tend to make the scene look over exposed in bright light, but you have managed the exposure well. The shadows give some great depth to the picture and the blue sky provides impact. Great shot.

It's a pity that so little is left of this building. So much interesting ancient memories in this places. Should be result in more peace there.

hi Jonathan. well, one thing is for sure, it must have been a beautiful building, not matter what the purpose. interesting to see it so isolated like this.. but good to see a little bit of the details. the scenery is beautiful...
I wanted to go to Afghanistan from Tajikistan, but I was not able to because of my Tajik visa and I could not go from Afg. to Uzb. But your photos are really making me wish I had gone (and got a second Tajik visa to do so). My next trip i am planning for Africa, but Northern India-Pakistan-Afghanistan is also tempting!

A good photo of those ancient and wonderful ruins. The surrounding landscape looks also interesting. Good work!

Fantastic shot Jonathan! Very well composed, with the dome set to one side and the modern mosque visible on the right. The dry hills provide a perfect backdrop to the scene. You have incredible detail visible here, I can even see individual bricks, and how precarious the whole structure is. I'm very jealous of your visit to Herat, but grateful for the wonderful photos. Superb!

We don't really know what it must have been, but sure it is a very interestic portico. The way it is captured, it seems that the effect of the deterioration of the bricks is as if it was made of "LEGO" pieces. Wonderful captured, with the sight of the beautiful landscape in the background. Good lighting and colours as usual. Congratulations, once more and thanks for sharing.
Have a nice evening,

that looks like a giant's helmet !
Maybe Goliath lived here... ;-)
Strange structure, good sharpness and color.

you keep on putting these excellent shots ... much faster than the pace at which I can keep up critiquing your work. This is another photo that had impressed me a lot. Looks splendid .. just a lonely arch in the middle of nowhere.
good study and tfs .. regards ... sarju
