Photographer’s Note
This is the mosque of Hazrat Ali in Mazar-i-Sharif, taken on a sunny day in May, 1973 and scanned from a Kodachrome slide. Hazrat Ali is the major pilgrimage shrine in Afghanistan, according to local tradition the burial site of Ali, cousin and son in law of the Prophet Muhammed. The majority of muslims believe that he is buried in Najaf in Iraq. The mosque dates back to late 15th century but has undergone major restorations on several occasions.

Hej Gert,
An extremely beautiful building, does it still exist?
This is just like an illustration to One Thousand And One Nights.

hej Gert
There's certainly something magic about central Asian tempels. It's allso very important to show that Afghanistan is something much more than the anarchy taliban manic state that's so oftend shown at etermedia. the light in this imagage is very fine, good blue sky and good details in shadow parts.

What an amazing building! This is easily one of the most beautiful mosques I have ever seen! You are very lucky to have seen it with your own eyes. I would love to visit Afghanistan myself but i dont think this will be possible for many years. Thanks for sharing this! Regards Dan Ferris
