He looks wet and not very happy, but his sisters were just nearby and ready to comfort him, so he was in no big trouble.
I saw this little boy and many other children in the park by the Hazrat Ali mosque, which I showed recently, in Mazar-i-Sharif in northern Afghanistan in May 1973. The mosque garden seemed to be the city's major playground.
I have scanned this from a Kodachrome slide.
You can make the little boy look bigger by clicking here.

i tuoi reportage hanno il dono dell'immediatezza e della spontaneitā.
E naturalmente non poteva essere diversamente anche in questa foto che mostra un aspetto dell'afganistan di una volta, peraltro non dissimile da quello di oggi.
Ciao e buona serata

Hello dear Gert,
This is a real "gem" ! This cute little boy is really not to happy but the capture itself is topclass.
TFS and best regards

Hi Gert. A touching photo of this sad child as if he knew already his fate and that of his country. What horrors has he seen in his forty years, what side has he chosen. If a Hazara, maybe he has been slaughtered already. "Cry The Poor Country." When I look at the photos of my primary school friends from Yugoslavia I often wonder what happened to them during the "cleansing" times. Regards. Klaudio.

what a little treasure! One can tell he is not very happy being left on his own, nice to knot that his distress did not last for long.
His red coat gives very good contrast to the more muted colors of the setting and helps to outline his silhouette better. Very well captured facial expression and superb quality of the photo overall.
Well done! All the best!

Hi Gert, This little boy is unhappy for a reason. He is sitting on the wet mud and his feet and hands are covered with mud. I guess he is not comfortable with all this dirt on his clothes and extremities. I hope his sister will clean him up. You have captured his nature and his innocent moment. Kids are pure. I have never seen such candid picture. Wonderful with all aspects. Thank for sharing

Hello Gert - I wonder if he'd still be crying if he knew he'd given you such a charming photo. The bright red of his outfit stands out brilliantly here, especially against the green grass, and you captured him in a nice candid moment. Thanks!

To imagine that this boy could be as old as me!
The sweetness of childhood...what is he now?
Subhogen (3200) 2014-02-26 0:39
This is a fine portrait of the Afghan boy dressed in bright red traditional attire. The red attire makes the boy stand out well against the BG. Placement of the subject in the frame is perfect. Excellent capture compels me to think what he might be doing now.I am an optimist and I am sure he is doing fine. Thanks for sharing.
dkmurphys (44082) 2014-02-26 1:31
Nice portrait. So simple yet so attractive. I like the traditional clothes a lot!
macjake (48349) 2014-02-26 1:51
I've always thought it would be very special if you could somehow meet up with these individuals today and show them these decades-old photos...but that would be nearly impossible. Its a nice thought though.
smartly positioned in the scene for a photo, the boy stands out like a sore thumb because of his brightly colored wardrobe.
terribly cute i must say!
see you around

Hello again, How cute he is in his colourful cap and red dress. He is over fifty now, maybe he has grandchildren like this. Splendid quality of old photo and scanning, as always.
Warm regrads MAlgo

Oh, his little face just plucks at heart strings! I'm pleased that you informed us of his nearby siblings!
I am impressed by how well this has scanned. The colours are strong and the details quite crisp. The photograph is well composed, the youngster strongly placed and looking into space. I love the details of his clothes. The little hat is delightful.
When I was in Pakistan, I saw men wearing hats like this but always single coloured, usually white.
Have a great day,

rychem (15440) 2014-02-26 8:16
Beautiful photo of a cute child, excellent portrait with sharp details, I agree with Denis, this child should see this photo on the web,

I am constantly wondering when I see a next photo from your archive. Another very interesting daily life shot.
Perfect quality of the scanned slide.

A very tender portrayal of the little boy in all his innocence. Perhaps he has had more than his fair share of misfortune by now. The quality of the picture with the colours, clarity, composition is superb like all your others. Thanks for sharing such a beautiful photograph.
Have a nice evening.
ourania (21432) 2014-02-26 9:58
a unique portrait, a simple scene from the little boy's life that may be a dim and distant memory in his mind (who knows if that day's memory has stayed with him). For us, the viewers that contemplate this picture after so many years and with a horrible knowledge the little boy still ignores, this picture generates thoughts regarding time and so many other issues. When I see a child crying I feel that time stops anyway. The colour, the contrast and the naturalness of this scene are striking. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely evening,
boa (5112) 2014-02-26 11:05
tyro (16748) 2014-02-26 14:23
I agree: this little boy does not look at all happy but we all know that clidren's moods and expressions change so quickly that it might just be that a second or two after this picture he was laughing and having fun playing in the mud. But it doesn't look like very nice mud in which to play - especially as he seems to be wearing some quite formal clothes even although they appear very worn.
In any case this is a lovely capture of a young child at play from forty years ago. I just wonder what life has thrown him in all those years?
Again, an excellent scan from our trusty Kodachrome, very well presented with lovely vibrant colours and excellent details and clarity.
subhendu_bagchi (23613) 2014-02-26 17:42
a portrait of a little boy is always worth seeing as here. You spotted him nicely with an expressive face and in a different mood. A nice one from the scanned series. Tfs.

Boa noite Gert
Sad, but he is a lovely boy. Hope that he is still alive.

Pretty old shot with nice clarity. The looks of the red boy indicates that he is looking for his parent and is not comfortable in your presence.Very well captured.TFS.

You will already often have asked yourself the question what has become of all those people you have ever met and probably more of the people you met in countries that later were torn apart by war.
Beautiful capture of this little boy in traditional and very colourful clothes.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Gert. A small, red-dressed boy. Title, photo and text complement each other perfectly. Today the boy is an adult - and who knows what has become of him.
Best rgds, Wolfgang.
abmdsudi (35340) 2014-02-27 8:01
Children are so unique objects to photograph, Like the expression on his face - looks happy and seems to have fun there. Really love the vibrancy of his red clothes and cap adding a touch of happiness too and this makes him really stand out against the run-down textured surroundings. Great shot catching the moment, Congrats
SnapRJW (26088) 2014-02-27 8:47
What is it that draws children to play in muddy puddles of water Gert? This one looks as if he has had a fine old time but now he is wet, dirty and probably hungry. He wants his mother and the game has lost its cachet! Beautiful shot. The little fellow's red clothing and colourful handcrafted hat are delightful. A lovely candid shot. Warm regards Rosemary
kasianowak (3786) 2014-02-28 6:29
What a fantastic portrait! The contrast between the colourful traditional clothes and the muddy surroundings tells a story here.

This is a splendid portrait of this small boy in traditional clothes. The red makes him stand out against the muddy water. Excellent positioning within the frame. I wonder how the last 40 years has treated him.
Kind Regards, Ann
Nicou (109695) 2014-03-01 5:44
quel portrait de cet enfant et le contraste de couleur entre le rouge et le vert quelle attitude et expression du visage avec la boue et l'eau génial.
Bravo et amitié
jcpix (8350) 2014-03-01 17:54
Perhaps it's simply the scan, but he really is quite red...clothing and face. :) I've seen this same expression countless times with my nephew, it's always so endearing, and also oddly amusing. Strange I know, but as you noted, he doesn't appear to be in dire straights, other than maybe a little uncomfortable. Simple human emotion, and yet it's very compelling and internalized when we see it in a medium like this. I doubt very many people would envision this as a photo opportunity, but you did...and it has netted a wonderful result! Enjoy the rest of your weekend. Take good care.

kind of photography I enjoy very much and appreciate(personally I´ve never been able to take reasonable portrait photo.I guess practise makes perfect). Here we get really excellent and meaningful portrait which captures well emotions and feelings of this little boy.And apart from that, just like in your previous shot(with the shop owner)we get here to think about the boy,for example how he´s life is going on since the time you captured it.
Have a nice day
eldancer1 (22435) 2014-03-03 7:37
Is that snow on the ground? But then considering the living condition in those countries it won't surprise me to see children without shoes even in the winter. I like the expression of the child's face. Good pov and dof with nice details. Wonderful colors. Well done, tfs.
Waylim (24342) 2014-03-03 17:42
Another wonderful slides and image from the past. He must be a grown man now, and perhaps a father of many children like this one. Lovely color of the deep red. Beuatiful and it also depict the way of life in such poor living condition.
batalay (33875) 2014-03-07 16:22
Now this boy, photographed in May of 1973, must be around 43 years old. It is unfortunate we cannot get these photos to their subjects so that they can see themselves as tiny children.
Regarding, my note, "One of my favorite photos is a photo I shot in 1975, a photo reminiscent of a Monet painting generally regarded as the first work in Impressionism." I apologize, I clearly had not made the proper substitution, which should be alright now.
