THE GAME:
“The buzkachi is a traditional game of Afghanistan and of the Central Asian steppes. The body of a beheaded ram is stuffed with wet sand to make it heavier. A white circle ( hallal ) is drawn with lime on the ground. At an equal distance on the right and on the left sides of the hallal two masts are erected. At a signal given by the judge(s) the participants rush to attempt to grab the carcass and throw it in the white circle after ridding around one of the masts. Once a rider has secured the carcass he may be immediately challenged by other competitors who will wrestle with him all along or be left alone while he goes to turn around the mast and then be assaulted on his way back to the hallal . Buzkachis can be pleasant affairs among members of the same clan or brutal encounters between highly-skilled horsemen of different groups, particularly when the monetary and prize incentives are high. (extracts from “Vents d’Est” – Pierre Claquin)”

Hallo Vincent
I have seen your pictures on this buzkachi game
all are great pictures
very nice capture of the moment
the light the expression all are great
great work

Another fine composition to add to your buzkachi series, Vincent. Again the details are fascinating, the DOF leaves the specatactors is the dust.

Fantastic photo, as good as the ones in the (old) book by Roland and Sabrina Michaud that is on my shelves ; I wish that one day I'll be able to see this with my own eyes, and first to enter into Afghanistan...

I'll add it to my favorites ; if I could suggest you something : as I am starving about personal accounts on that specific country, I would have liked to read in which circumstances you took this photo, or comments about Samangan (if you have time, of course...)

Hi Vincent,
8th Buzkaci photo on your series.Every pohoto is excellent from each other. Congratulation,
Best regards
Bulent

Hello Vincent,
Amazing. Like a shot from an epic movie. Great DOF and frozen action. Really a dynamic shot. I like the expressions on the riders' faces, and the sand bursting off the ground on the lower right. Good colors too. Regards. Latiff.

Superbe photo, très beau cadrage !

Hi Vincent,
Fantastic view in your shot.
Interesting shot, I like the light here and the colors.
Best regards.

Hi Vincent,

Not only this photos but all other pictures you've taken at the game 'buzkachi' are masterpiece!
All are full of verve and vivid.
Composition and colors are perfect.
We cannot see this atmosphere anywhere else!

Dear Vincent,
i don't know why this picture is not higher rated than it is, it is just perfect. I have a lot of respect for a photographer that knows so well to 1) capture the very split second 2) to worry about the backgroud 3) to the have a good subject in front 4) to have the light from the right angle. It's just beautiful. My compliments!

Hi Vincent what a fantastic scene well timed and composed, the expressions on the mens faces vary and show some great emotions, a good sharp image thats worthy of any world travel magazine, good work and have a good weekend best regards John.

Encore moi! ;))
Tu me sembles y être parvenu...

BRAVO!... Bravo, Vincent!

A wonderful TE shot along with the note. Although it is a quote, which I usually disapprove of, it fits like a glove to your photo. I call a TE shot, a photo that teaches the viewer something about the world we live in. I saw so many photos today that were posted with anything but this purpose in mind but now I'm happy that I saw this shot of yours. I don't know if it's just me that I come across so many photos that are not worth posting on TE and if it were my decision I would cancel the accounts of people who constantly post artistic or other kinds of shots that don't teach us something about this world. Recently one of our colleagues was threatening to quit TE because of the points for friendship system that flourished on the site but eventually calmed down. Many times I think about quitting too when I fail to see a single picture that I consider worthwhile. I'm saying all this just for you to understand how happy this photo of yours made me now.

I came across it as it was featured on the main page as a favorite photo and it became one of my favorites too. That's why I didn't quit yet and I'm going to come back if I ever do so. I know that eventually I'm going to come across a posting like this one once again and it's all worth it. I'm not a good photographer and I don't travel much, but I have the privilege to enjoy such treasures posted here on TE and I don't wanna give it up just because I get upset at the sight of certain pictures. I know most of us post such pictures but it saddens me when I see serial offenders.

Thanks for sharing, Vincent!
Iulian

PS WOW... I just looked at the whole series and I realized this is one of the worst of 'em all. Amazing shots, Vincent. Congratulations!
