A daughter leads her mother up the side of the eroded city wall of Ghazni. The ancient structure encloses the old town and their home.
Ghazni is to the south of Kabul on the road to Kandahar.
This is another of my personal favourite pictures from Afghanistan. I hope you like it too.

Hi Jonathan. yeah, this is excellent, the parrallel blue sky and blue burkha is great... and the flair of the burkha gives a sense of urgency, like they are in a hurry. really, a fantastic shot, no wonder it one of your favorites.
Ebbe (9617) 2006-01-03 13:48
I like the combination of blue sky and blue garment in this. The corner position of the two humans are also nice.
cirospat (530) 2006-01-03 13:56
very interesting shot for captured the moment for composition and for colors

A powerful picture with strong contrast makes the image a high impact one. The shadows in particular have great effect. The placing of the people to the bottom right of the frame works well to. High impact, and thanks for sharing.

very nice picture, the person looks like a ghost in blue, a very nice paralell with the wonderful sky. The picture is clear and well compose.
Happy New Year.

I like the wall texture, good POV, well balanced composition, bravo Martin
AmiBe (6042) 2006-01-03 18:01
you did again a very good job, the vertical compo is excellent.
There are just 2 colors on this shot, it's a chance that the second woman wear a blue burqa.
It seems that the women are running, to go away from your camera ??? ;-)
Very well done
Cormac (26565) 2006-01-03 22:21
Again, a wonderful shot. The two people ascending the path, with the ruins above. The billowing clothes give this a really nice touch, especially since it matches the blue in the sky. I like the vertical composition too. Great work!

Jonathan, j'aime la composition de la photo le bleu du vêtement répond au bleu du ciel. Et entre les deux une forteresse.
cengiz (3593) 2006-01-04 3:26
perfectly contrast background, sky and burka, very very good composition
riclopes (35577) 2006-01-04 3:56
I love the scene of mother and daughter running up hill, in these ruins. It could be a scene of a movie...
Also love the simple colours, with the blue burka, playing with the blue of the sky. The motion of this burka is fantastic, like flying alone in the air. A very interesting image, very well composed. Congratulations and thanks!

Hi Jonathan, and Happy New Year !
There are good reasons to consider this one a favorite, exposure and light are kept well just below OE, the upwards view to the city wall finished on this superb and deep blue sky and the two women add motion to the view, I like the older one that with her burqa makes me think of a butterfly, a very atractive photo.
Have a nice day,
devimeuxbe (58557) 2006-01-04 6:58
Very greayt one. The girl is like a butterfly. Beautifull POV. The blue color of the girl is nice with the sky.
jhm (150812) 2006-01-04 11:51
A picture with very well contrast, certainly between city wall and blue sky, the mother and daughter walking toward above, but it's lovely how the burqa is waving.
Very well done!
weswang (18223) 2006-01-04 12:54
Hi Jonathan, An excellent action shot with the wall in the background. Nice contrast and good composition. Without your explanation of the mother in the back, it is hard to guess that what is the situation in this chasing action :D.
fireflyz (2097) 2006-01-04 13:23
I love this! Composition is excellent and I especially like the form and placement of the women in this photo. There is a fine balance not only in elements but also in colors. Thanks fo this favorite!
jjbach (9324) 2006-01-05 4:24
Very nice composition Jonathan of these wild rocky place! Most of all, I like the contrast of the blue clothes in this beige-greay area.

capthaddock (28790) 2006-01-05 7:02
Hi Jonathan - another super-exotic shot combining culture and ruins, the inhuman looking blue blob looks really interesting, excellent timing and exposure despite the strong light.
BlaiseCendrars (0) 2006-01-05 8:01
Hi Jonathan, yes the 'sense of urgency' as Narayan elegantly describes it is a wonderful feature of this photo. Very well seen and and excellently exposured. Thanks and best regards, Chris.
Cricri (117347) 2006-01-05 9:53
Sans ta note qui pourrait penser qu'a l'interrieur de ses Ruines, il y a des habitations, Belle couleur du ciel et ce long voile bleu de la femme
Bon POV et lumiére.
Stepan (27210) 2006-01-05 14:02
Impressive and beautiful.
The whole composition is great, the wind in the burqha creates a beautiful effect, the blue of the burqha drives to the sky, the place must be incredible...
coco (30439) 2006-01-08 17:53
Good composition. The people of the pocture give to the photo a special touch.
Well seen and well captured.
Fixfocus (9385) 2006-01-11 13:12
I missed this great shot. What an impressive place and the rushing mother and doughter with the flying blue clothe make it outstanding for shure.
sarju (5324) 2006-01-11 14:20
I am not sure if something could have been done about what seems to be the overexposed part of the photo .... but your composition is very dynamic for sure. Excellent work here with the the capture of the wind on the clothes
congrats ... thanks for the share
cheers .... sarju
rahul__rahul__ (2250) 2006-01-19 16:28
nice picture, I like how their clothing contrasts with the surroundings, and how the burqa is waving. The colors and lighting are good too. Great job.
colinbrenchley (6431) 2006-03-18 11:34
Jonathan. Did you buy the blue dress for the lady to match the blue sky! Excellent use of complimentary colours. Shows that other colours work as well as RED!
Mistral (15402) 2006-04-02 16:25
your gallery its stunning and I love the images from Afghanistan.
This one is fantastic: the long step of the girl and the dramatic shade of the burka suggest they are in hurry (as Don already said). The shades on the burka designed the movements of the woman below. They are running to join them to the sky, running to the blue!
The overlooking ancient walls overlooking down out of time. Many sensations from this beautiful image.
Thanks a lot, Jonathan.
marieaude (1196) 2006-04-20 12:46
Hello, this is fantastic shoot which I just discovery now. The blue sky is great and I love the mouvement of the blue burka of the lady. The landscape is surprising. This is a really good photo I think. Thanks for your work. Bye bye
partha (14020) 2006-04-21 22:25
Stunning image. Nice composition and lot of dynamism in it.

The picture says you a real master of art of photography.
yannick (1471) 2006-11-17 2:31
I very much like this picture, this interesting walls in the back, and the blue of the burka echoing the sky. Vedry good composition too.
I saw in old books that there are two towers in ghazni. Are they still standing?
happypoppeye (4819) 2007-07-04 15:29
First off, you most probably have the best comprehensive portfolio of afghanistan pictures on this site. I see you have been to the Minaret of Jam which I hear is not easy - among other sites such as Bamiyan, Kandahar, etc. You seem to have photos from other points spread out throughout the country. Alot of your other photos are excellent but this one really "pops" out.
This one, in particular, would probably be one of my favorites also. Just an excellent catch. The woman, in her blue burka, really provides and excellent focal point and the rest of the photo just seems to exude from her. This is the power of an exotic, what most would say sad, powerful, colorful focal point. Just an excellent photo well composed with great color.
Clairedelune (4923) 2007-07-04 17:10
In opening TE tonight, this photo was on the main page (the welcome page) and the thumbnail attracted my eyes...
Obviously, a little piece of the sky has dropped on the ground, for the greatest pleasure of our eyes...
The time of a wonderful photo, lets try to forget about burka. It is just the pure beauty of this photo that grab my heart.
I had a look at your Afghanistan photos. Very, very interesting. It must have been quite an experience to travel there in 2005.
Today, 6 Canadians died in Afghanistan. I hope there will be an end to violence in that country.
Polonaise (5802) 2007-07-05 18:10
This one picture has the power of demolishing our knowledge about this one of a kind country...
The scene over there...
Our western way of thinking not allows us to fully understand the factors of living in there...
Dozens of questions...Who...Where...What's for...A fortres...No road...What's the reason of going there...
Forget the questions...
Enjoy the photograph...
Icredibly beautiful photoraph.

This picture really looks so dferent than any other picture, in fact the dress of this people is so misitic and wonderful but the place is amazing like to be in other world, the shape of the woman dressing in blue is amazing. In the techitian part, the picture is perfect, the color, sharp angle etc.
Greetings from Mexico
noborders (1010) 2007-07-30 5:26
This is a somewhat sad photo (IMO, given the sad state of that wall), but an image full of poetry with the blue veil agitated by movement - or wind -, its colour the same as the static sky...
A splendid composition,
naseer16 (23) 2007-09-05 6:20
Love this shot of you..Man!
cyborg83 (4669) 2007-11-02 2:45
Excellent shot, the color of the sky is perfect!!
daddo (26534) 2007-11-06 18:32
hi Jonathan. Having read Hosseini's Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, it was great to come across your wonderful shots of Afghanistan. This one is particularly stunning for a number of reasons. The blue of the burkha and the vivid blue of the sky connect the two ends of the composition> The figures themselves look dynamic in their struggle to climb to the entrance of the walls. And of course the antiquity of Ghazni itself comes across and even a hint of its former glory. Great shot. Regards. Klaudio.

for the same reasons as exposed before my opinion, great and beautiful pic with this blue spot and the movement !
