Photographer’s Note
If there is one thing that is quickly learned in Afghanistan it is which side of the stakes to stay on. These are engineer stakes from demining activity. White is safe, red is not. An area is worked by armored vehicles, dogs, metal detectors, and by man himself; and then worked again. This is a job where only one mistake is given.
I never had a fitting subject to use the black and white with a colored portion until now. I cant think of anything else that would matter to the person working in this field. Watch the stakes and walk the line.

If ever an image, that strictly speaking is on the borderline of the rules of TE, deserves to be seen then surely this is it.
A very simple and stark image of a situation that has a very simple and very stark reality.
Very powerful piece of work.

A powerful message that is given by these stakes. You are absolutely right about the b/w and color here.

Funny, I didn't realize the rest of the picture was in B&W until I read the note. :-)

This picture coupled with the interesting story is a poignant depiction of life in the midst of war. Good job!
