Photos

This is my third posting of pictures I took on a cruise trip to Antarctica. We were there for 3 days. The first day was cloudy although there were still lots of amazing photo opportunities and the Antarctic presented itself in a different mood. The second day was a glorious one. The sea was calm, there was no wind, and it was a “balmy” -2 C. In reality of course, this land is a harsh and unforgiving environment unless you are a penguin. And stories of the unfortunate faith of many of the early explorers abound. However, seen from the comfort of the deck of a modern luxury cruise ship, the sceneries were stunning. I felt really privileged to be able to see this amazing part of our world. But as the ice pilot of the ship told us, we should become ambassadors of Antarctica (no one owns any land in Antarctica) when we return home, and to promote measures to preserve this continent. So I am doing my part, through my photographs, to let others see this wonderful part of the world.
This picture was taken at 65,07.01S, 64,01.30W, just inside the Lemaire Channel. There was this little tranquil bay where the water was perfectly still. I find that the landscape shown here really conveys that frigid feeling of the Antarctic, but yet it is so beautiful to look at. The cloud added that painter’s rendition to the blue sky, and the floating ice and reflection in the calm water added interest to the picture.
