Taken in early Spring, the Emporer penguin balances the chick on its feet to stop it from freezing to death. The female lays her egg and then passes it over to the male penguin to incubate and hatch the chick through the cold winter months, while she heads off to sea to feed. It will be many weeks before she returns to releive the male so he to can go and feed. The mortality rate is very high amongst the chicks.
