"Shipwrecked Penguin" Photo

Photographer’s Note

One of the small icebergs is going to stay in Admiralty Bay, King George Island (South Shetlands). This ice is coming from continental Antarctica. It is 100 km from here to Antarctic Peninsula, so this peace of ice needs to spent few days drifting on Bellingshausen Sea to come visit us. This iceberg is close to shore (actually this picture was taken from the shore), because a penguins colonies are around here some of them are using it as a place to stay, have a break with hunting for krill.

Hey... there he is, that little fellow... A bit sad probably with no friends around him.
But on the other hand, the iceberg looks as if it was a speedboat and the wake was on the left side of it.
Maybe that little fellow is a misanthrope and enjoys this time like never before.
The picture is well composed, well balances and well focused which obliges me to post 2 big points for that.

It is a nice photo. However there are a few problems. First, the composition is not balanced right- there is too much sky and too little ocean to my taste. Second, the penguin is too small and far away and yet it is your main subject. There is not much you can do about it because of the sheer size of the iceberg. However the photo is rather unusual, the light and sharpness are very good and so are the colors.
I have done a workshop, not to improve it but for other reasons as you will find out.

I love your Antarctica photos, Piotr. This one is very nice. Some may say that there is too much sky, but I think it's necessary to emphasize the fact that there is nothing else around. The penguin is a bit microscopic, but it's OK, even funny in a way. Well done.

This is a great photo. I really like the composition and the small penguin really shows the massive scale. More ocean than sky may have been interesting, but probably just different with almost the same effect. I really like your composition and the colors in the ice makes it very pleasing to the eye.
