Photographer’s Note

Gentoo penguins navigating ice on the shore of Neko Harbour. There was a rookery at the top of a nearby hill.

Gentoo penguins are identified by a wide white stripe that goes across the tops of their heads from one eye to the other, and their very bright orange beak and orange feet. They live on many of the islands of the Antarctic region but the main colony is in the Falkland Islands; world-wide there are about 320,000 breeding pairs of Gentoo penguins.
They stand about 30-35 in. / 75 - 95 cm tall. They weigh about 13 lbs / 6 kg. They eat mostly krill and some small fish. Their lifespan is 15 to 20 years.
