Photographer's Note
This picture taken from McMurdo at around 1:00 AM local time shows Mt. Discovery and its eastern slopes swept by strong winds blowing snow over to create a silver lining. I'm looking across the Ross Ice Shelf to the mountain and zoomed in at around 400mm. The sun is a little outside the top left corner.
The summit of the mountain (2692 meters) is more than 40 miles (~65 km) from my lens! Try to imagine the scale of the windy weather on the slopes of the mountain.
