Photographer’s Note

The tannery itself is breathtaking in both sight and smell. The stench from the vats punches you in the face long before you actually see the courtyard. It makes one’s eyes water just to imagine that there were 200 of these tanneries in the medina back in fifteenth-century Fez. Now there are only two, where young men toil with pungent hides inside a lethal cocktail of dyes, urine, pigeon dropping and a dash of quicklime, for roughly US$7.50 a day.
