Photographer’s Note

I could not resist this one. Going in holidays to a remote location in Southern Africa and finding someone in the jersey of one of the most popular Portuguese football clubs, SPORTING CLUBE DE PORTUGAL, was simply beyond belief.

This boy was wandering along the Zimbabwean border post with Zambia in Victoria Falls. As you can see, he looked very sad and most likely he was sad. And hungry too, because the situation in Zimbabwe is getting worse by the day and they do not have food to eat in a daily basis.

We saw lots of people crossing into Zambia. The Zimbabwe side was crowded with simple people trying to go to Zambia. When we asked our driver the reason for so many people at the immigration office he answered that most of the people around Victoria Falls are in a desperate situation of hunger and they do whatever they can to go to Zambia just for a feed.

So, that boy has probably a very good reason to be sad. He was begging around the tourist’s cars and when I saw him in the SCP jersey I took the picture. After that I gave him some money and he smiled.

The photo was taken from inside the car. Same glass reflections can be seen above his head. The background was dull in colour and interest, so I decided to go for this partial colour/B&W presentation. The quality of the photo is not great but I wanted to make a statement about the actual Zimbabwe politics and also to show it to all football fans, in particular to my Portuguese friends.

Hi Antonio,

it is astonishing to see how football could be popular. I met an AC Milan fan in Swaziland...it is almost incredible.
And I am obviously full of sadness when I heard of Zimbaabwe, who used to be one of the richest country in southern Africa and now it is plagued by famine.
it is really sad....

A expressão do rapaz mostra um sentimento de vazio e trsiteza. O quanto ele deve ter abdicado de sua infancia, quais são suas carencias. Vive numa situação dificil, mas sem meios de sair dessa situação. Acumulo de riqueza na mão de poucos, excesso de probreza na vida de muitos...é uma tristeza vivermos nesse mundo que não só destrói a natureza e o ambiente, mas também ao próprio semelhante.
Bela (porém tirste) imagem dessa realidade.

Olá António,
Esta foto é dois-em-um, ou mesmo três-em-um, alegre e triste ao mesmo tempo. Alegre especialmente para sportinguistas. Mas isso não cobre a profunda tristeza do rapaz.
Quanto a este e outros "adeptos" de clubes europeus, alguns são de facto adeptos, ou pelo menos adeptos de futebol. Mas muitas destas camisolas vão parar a estes lugares por via de caridade. Já tive encomendas para comprar em Lisboa camisolas "originais" para adeptos cabo-verdianos de clubes portugueses, mas também acontece serem levadas para lá já usadas, junto com outras roupas oferecidas a organizações de solidariedade.
Quanto aos aspectos técnicos da foto, tenho a notar uma certa mancha ou linha azulada à volta das orelhas, onde devia estar o fundo a preto-e-branco. Nada de grave, pois o importante é esta dualidade cor-p&b, alegria-tristeza, globalização-local, que a imagem transmite.

É triste ver pessoas passando fome, parece que esse flagelo nunca termina.
Boa idéia fazer uma desaturação parcial, destacando a figura do rapaz. . Boa foto, a face dele expressa humildade e tristeza.

Olá António,
Tantas vezes já me fiz esta pergunta:'Como é possível?'. Como é possível um continente com tantas potencialidades continuar a ter gente a morrer à fome, guerra, doenças epidémicas que dizimam a sua população. Será a ganância dos seus governantes? será que eles são preguiçosos? será que eles gostam é mesmo de viver assim (não me parece...), e poderia continuar por aqui fora. O que +e facto é que eles serão tão preguiçosos como muitos na Europa ou noutro continente qualquer, são governdos por gananciosos, mas nos outros continentes tambem os há.
Já alguem disse que o continente africano foi amaldicoado e às vezes bem que o parece...
A expressão do rapaz é tocante e revela bem o seu sentimento.
´
Agora a versão mais soft... não admira que esteja triste, pois alem de ter fome tem na frente da camisola uma combinação de riscas, quadrados e bolas... onde é que já se viu isto? ainda por cima oferecem-lhe uma camisola com o leão como simbolo ora isto já ele está farto de ver e ao vivo.
Imagina ele: 'será que o senhor não tinha uma vermelha com uma aguia para me ofercer??':))))

There is something so touching about his expression. And strangely, the greenish tinge adds to it. He's from another world, isolated, from you by the glass, from all of us by the sealed borders and of the brutal economic situation brought about by Robert Mugabe and by the international sanctions against Zanu-PF. I was in Zimbabwe for a few weeks in 2001, just before things really fell apart. I met so many people who were just barely surviving then. I often wonder how many must have perished by now. Here is the Web site of a documentary about Zimbabweans who try to cross over into Botswana, just as you have seen them crossing into Zambia. Let's hope this will come to an end soon. Best, -Hugh

Ah, lagartagem de uma figa, que até no meio de África se encontram!
Por acaso quase me parece de mau gosto ironizar perante este retrato tão tristemente comovente. O rapaz tem um olhar tão forte e ao mesmo tempo tão triste...
Uma foto magnífica, sem dúvida, mesmo que toda a envolvente não seja de todo interessante, mas o que conta é o modelo (e, vá lá, a camisola...).E se atendermos às circunstâncias em que foi tirada, é mesmo muito admirável. Ter posto tudo a P&B excepto o rapaz foi muito boa ideia.
Aquele esverdeado na cara do rapaz é intencional ou foi o teu lagartismo que se te escapou?

Olá Antônio!
Isso é uma triste realidade mesmo, não só africana mas também brasileira, pois ainda tem muita gente aqui sem ter o que comer, e tal aqui como na África, parece que uma das poucas alegrias do povo é o futebol, um esporte contagiante mesmo, sem dúvida nenhuma o maior e mais praticado no mundo!
Quanto a foto está excelente, o olhar do garoto junto com o fundo desfocado em P&B ficou ótimo, demonstra bem a sensação de angústia que a foto cria na gente...

É sempre interessante encontrar referência ao nosso país, tanto mais quanto mais distantes nos encontramos.
A realidade que a nota descreve é triste mas certamente este rapaz "lucrou" algo com esta foto, mesmo que por breves momentos.

Olá António,
La desaturación parcial te ha dado un gran resultado, el chico con su camiseta del Sporting con los tonos verdes se destaca con fuerza gráfica sobre el fondo de la foto y el resto de la imagen en B/N. Los reflejos del cristal del coche eran inevitables, no veo un problema en eso.
El WS es simplemente, fantástico, en una divertida toma.
Buen trabajo fotográfico y excelente nota informativa.

Oi amigo ,
Parabens gostei muito desta tua foto, a vida não é so paisagens , tem destas coisas duras e tristes , e incrivel como o futebol chega a todo o lado , mas a vida não e so futebol , os clubes tambem podiam lutar por estas causas mas não fazem nada .

Olá António,
Esta imagem é angustiante, mas é uma realidade da qual não podemos nos esquecer.
Vejo aqui alguém parecendo mais jovem do que é, talvez um crescimento prejudicado pela desnutrição, ou alguém aparentando mais velho do que é, pelo sofrimento.
Gritante, porém, é o olhar amargo que incomoda o espírito da gente e que nem o colorido da camiseta do esporte consegue apaziguar.

A friend of mine came back from Zimbabwe a month ago, and told me about the poor condition there...no more food and a very high inflation...sad to say, but your image with the hungry man conveyed well the situation there :(

It seems strage in such a bountiful continent, that the organisers/Governments there seem forever unwilling to restructure that place and give more folks a fair chance at a better life. Belissima foto senhor Antonio, o repaz ficou mesmo bem, claro que as suas circunstancias sao um pouco precarias e ate me faz lembrar no dia em que o tsunami destruiu Phuket em 2004, dias depois enconraram um menino a diambolar na praia de uma ilha prixima com uma camisola da seleccao portuguesa entao esta foto me fez recuar no tempo, bom trabalho e que nos continue a mostrar mais, obrigado, Joao Salas

This guy is such a fan of the SCP that he also colored his skin to dark green ;D...
I have another explanation about your encounter, which is not that surprizing in the end... he also might be originated from neighboring Mozambique (which might also worsen his own situation in Zimbabwe, although the borders are quite loose...), where supporting a portuguese football team is cultural you can assess by yourself from the writings on the wall here. Please read my caption too... I shot the Benfica side while on my side of the wall there was a huge Sporting painting.

In connection with the excellent text it confronts us with individual life reality. The view of the young man says more than thousand words. Para mim, a fotografia mais do que uma técnica, é uma forma de registar emoções. E aqui conseguiste transmitir plenamente o drama e a emoção... África parece ter essa sina, de tão rica a ganância sem escrúpulos faz com que seja tão pobre...

Não sou muito apreciador de desaturação parcial, mas percebo porque é que o fizeste aqui. Não há dúvida que ver uma t'shirt destas para quem anda a viajar pelo mundo remoto, faz-nos sorrir. Pena que contraste com a desgraça em que se encontra este continente e que está bem espelhado na cara do rapaz. Esta expressão e olhar até dói! Felizmente, deste-nos um rebuçado para nos animar, em WS ;-) Estes paquidermes são mesmo gigantescos! Excelente nota informativa, como é habitual em ti, António.
