Photographer’s Note

these people are probably on their way to a market further away on the road. Proximity to the Viktoria falls is evident here as we can see on the wet road. The spray from the falls rises to a height of over 400 metres!

Zimbabwe today is in conflict over the reign of President Robert Mugabe. Human rights abuses and economic mismanagement leading to hyperinflation and impoverishment have increased popular support for newly sworn-in Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and the opposition. Opposition gatherings are frequently the subject of brutal attacks by the police force.

-------------------------------------------------
Millions of people are dependent on food aid, unemployment hovers around 80%, the inflation rate now stands at over 200,000,000% and many Zimbabweans, often the better educated, have been forced to flee. As if life couldn’t get any more difficult, a cholera outbreak that began in late 2008 has claimed thousands of victims.
But behind the grim data lies one of southern Africa’s most beautiful countries. And despite being forced to sacrifice so much, Zimbabweans have not lost their humour or resolve. With so few visiting the country, those who do can expect royal treatment. They need you. Oh, and Zimbabwe’s got one of the world’s best climates…even the worst government can’t destroy that.
