One in a short series of pictures taken on a weekend trip to Kariba, whilst visiting Zimbabwe on business in March 1984. They were all shot on slide film and have since been digitised and processed through Photoshop.
The Kariba Dam is a hydroelectric dam in the Kariba Gorge of the Zambezi river basin between Zambia and Zimbabwe. It is one of the largest dams in the world, standing 128 metres (420 feet) tall and 579 metres (1,900 feet) long.
The double curvature concrete arch dam was constructed between 1955 and 1959 by Impressit of Italy at a cost of $135,000,000 for the first stage with only the Kariba South power cavern. Final construction and the addition of the Kariba North Power cavern by Mitchell Construction was not completed until 1977 due to largely political problems for a total cost of $480,000,000. 86 men lost their lives during construction.
The Kariba Dam project was proposed and implemented by the government of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, or Central African Federation (CAF). The CAF was a semi-independent state in southern Africa that existed from 1953 to the end of 1963, comprising the former self-governing Dominion of Southern Rhodesia and the British Colonies of Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland, now known as Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi respectively.

Une autre belle pièce extraite de tes archives. Une vue large avec un POV qui permet d'apprécier comment le barrage s'insère dans le site. Excellent rendu des couleurs et des détails.

This is an old scan in a very good condition, Stephen, well preserved and kept fine colors.
The scenery is impressive, fine depth as well.

Ta note est très intéressante. L'ouvrage hydraulique gigantesque est très bien décrit depuis ce point de vue. Le ciel et la lumière sont agréables. La qualité est bonne avec une bonne netteté et une grande profondeur. Bravo.

Nice capture of the Kariba Dam with excellent colour saturation & framing. Perhaps a bit more sharpness? I love the diagonal line of the blue water from top left to bottom right. Tfs!

this most impressive Dam curves nicely across the verticals in a pleasant light.
I like the play between the light and the shadows. The conversion from slide to digi has been very good here.

What a shot!
Your high vantage point has produced a wonderful view across the countryside..
Your inclusion of the f/g has helped to produce this great sense of depth, whilst the dam wall makes an irresistible link beteen the f/g and the b/g.
Your use of two diagonal lines makes for a splendid composition..
My warm regards,

That is another nicely digitalized shot with vibrant colour hues. I see, at that time we used the same brand, Canon, but not the same model. The AE1 I used in the late 1970s, then I switched to the A1 and F1. Both models I used till recently, the last time I think was in 2005 or 2006, when I was forced to switch to digital. I still have our Canon bodies, lenses and flashes in our second home in Bangkok, but I do not use them anymore - what could be wrong, I do not know.
Coming back to your shot I like the diagonal approach with the dam cutting from left to the right through the picture. Good photo job

Très bon point de vue sur ce réservoir, ne semble pas vraiment un paysage africain, il semble plus européen.
Excellente qualité d'image pour une photo numérisée. Excellente luminosité et des couleurs.

Hi Stephen. Such a dam is of course a special eye-catcher. It seems he is not very productive. But at least he mark lates the progress of a country. I turn now to the informative text. The technical quality of the photos is o.K. Overall, a successful contribution to TE. Rgds, Wolfgang.
Have a nice WE
