This is what Dr David Livingstone would had seen when, in early November 1855, he travelled down the Zambezi River to see for himself what the natives called “Mosi-oa-Tunya” (the smoke that thunders). Approaching the falls in canoes, he could see the columns of spray and hear the thunderous roar of the water in front of him.

In his book “Missionary Travels and Researches In South Africa”, Livingstone wrote:

“The whole scene was extremely beautiful; the banks and islands dotted over the river are adorned with sylvan vegetation of great variety of color and form…no one can imagine the beauty of the view from any thing witnessed in England. It had never been seen before by European eyes; but scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight.”

“When about half a mile from the falls, I left the canoe by which we had come down thus far, and embarked in a lighter one, with men well acquainted with the rapids, who, by passing down the centre of the stream in the eddies and still places caused by many jutting rocks, brought me to an island situated in the middle of the river, and on the edge of the lip over which the water rolls.”

The WS1 is a partial view of Livingstone Island, only accessible by organized tour boat. The tours to the island depart from the Zambian side and are limited to 5 a day. The tour boats carry a maximum of 12 people each time and the number of people visiting the island per day is only 60. We were lucky enough to get 2 seats for the mid-morning tour. All the other tours were fully booked for the following 3 days.

Access to this unique island is seasonal and depends entirely on the water level in the Zambezi River. The trip to the island takes only 6-8 minutes by speed boat. In the island there a tent which can comfortably seat up to 12 guests, a kitchen and the world famous “loo with a view” (in WS2).

Antonio, great moment and POV! The quality of the photo could have been better, although.

Wonderfull! Like rainbow distributed by the steam.
Well done..

Hola Antonio,

this is the sight I dream of seeing when (if) I happen to go to Vic falls.
Well done!

Hello Antonio,

I had not noticed this point of view when I was there. Very good idea.
For sure in stand alone, it is not enough, but put in a series, it gives an idea of what are the Falls.

Yves.

Maria do Carmo

Hi Antonio!
Straong light, but you managed a good shot. The rainbow is the eyecatcher here and I like the texture of the water in the foreground.Your workshop version Nr.1 is great too.
Regards,Leo

Linda fotografia. Gostei do formato bem retangular, dando mais enfoque a cascata e o arco-íris.
Boas cores e nitidez.
Andre

Ola Antonio
THe view with the rainbow is very nice but I find that this photo is weaker than your usual photos, there is something missing on the foreground plus the half tree on the left is distracting.

Daniel

fantastic composition and definition. The effect is great like an impressionistic painting.

Ola Antonio,
What an amazing trip!! How exciting to be one of those few who made it to the island. You took great advantage of this spectacular POV. The rainbow is one of the brightest I've seen; the clarity of the colors is wonderful. It was really good of you to include Livingstone's words with the photo. It makes the shot even more memorable

The 'Loo with a View' is an excellent WS post. I'm sure you know that Mooloolaba also has a 'Loo with a View.' I think my most exciting Loo was in Alaska when we were fishing from a boat in grizzly terrritory, when we had to go ashore to use the loo, the arm guide accompanied us.
SAA, Pat

Hello Antonio, Stunning shot, I like the composition, you've handled the hash light well, must be an amazing place to visit, Cheers Rick

A beautiful waterfall shot. Nice composition and well placed in the frame.

Paulo

HI Antonio

A beautiful shot taken at a perfect moment. You always seem to be getting lucky with rainbows :)
I like the low POV here which makes the scene even more dramatic. And a good note as well. Definitely helps conjure up images of what Dr. Livingstone would have experienced.

Cheers
Vivek

Wagner.

hi antonio
Clearly not a trip for the out-of-shape!

it is a very cleverly observed shot
this is truly exceptional, the subject, the light, the water and rainbow all combine to make a masterpiece.

O “loo with a view” é curioso, mas just for fun.

I envy you for being there - what a marvellous trip. The rainbow is so full and complete, well captured. To travel to somewhere like this, you must go on a packaged tour, right? Theres no indepedant travel here?
Thanks,
Dave

Hi Antonio
Good POV at water level with a nice rainbow you got there! We almost can hear the roar too! Colors and exposure are fine.
LAurent

Ola Antonio!

Bonjour, mon ami Antonio,
[A Ramaiya]

This is a perpetual rainbow I think, the scene is "extremely beautiful" also in this your image Antonio, I like also the others into the ws especially the one with the boat, excellent note too, well done, compliments.

Hello Antonio
A rare sight of a near complete rainbow, low in height, separated by the mist from the water, which has lovely textures. I liked your WS1 with the speed boat & view of the island. Good work & a very well written note too. The title you chose from Livingstone's book is hauntingly beautiful.
Regards
Angshu

Hi Antonio,
Beautiful rainbow and I love the mistiness created by the spray of the water. Nicely done.

Hello Antonio,
